Meet Hannah, our Very Lovely Senior of the Day! At 16 years young, Hannah is happy but has gradually lost weight after moving from her city apartment to a home with much larger space in Southampton. Dr Kalvig was called to pay a house-call visit and found Hannah in very good condition! We hope that our lab work will support the idea that increased exercise contributes to healthy body weight, versus other medical conditions, which can predispose older patients to weight loss. Once our tests are in, we will advise Hannah on a nutrition and health care plan to continue living her best life in her home! 🏠 🐈❤️

Rabies Alert for Long Island Pet Owners from The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center

The Nassau County Department of Health has declared rabies an “imminent public health threat” after confirming 25 rabid animals since July 2024, including 22 raccoons and three feral cats. Suffolk County has also reported rabid raccoons in the Amityville area, and rabies continues to circulate across all five NYC boroughs, especially among raccoons, bats, and skunks.

Vaccinating your pets and avoiding contact with wildlife are critical steps to protect your pets — and the rest of your family — from this deadly viral disease.

Additional information from KSV:
To protect yourself from possible exposure to rabies, health officials suggest the following:
• Do not feed or touch wild animals and discourage them from seeking food near your home.
• Ensure pets are up to date on rabies vaccinations! Keep pets indoors and allowed outside only under leashed observation.
• Keep family pets indoors at night and do not allow them to roam freely.
• Advise your family to avoid approaching any unknown animal – whether wild or domestic – especially those acting abnormally.
• If a wild animal is on your property, immediately bring children and pets indoors and let it wander away. Call wildlife control if necessary.
• Do not touch dying or dead animals. If you must move them, use a shovel, wear heavy rubber gloves, a mask, and eye protection. Double-bag the carcass and place it in your outdoor trash can. Alert your local Department of Health.

If bitten or scratched by an unknown animal, seek medical care right away and call your local Department of Health. There have been no reported human rabies cases in Nassau County, thanks to effective post-exposure prophylaxis treatment.

For KSV Clients: Please ensure your pet’s rabies vaccination is up to date.
If you’re not sure about your pet's vaccination status, please call us at 212-644-1022, and we’ll verify the information for you.

Walter thoroughly enjoyed our garden during his visit this week with both Dr. Kalvig and Dr. Shorter. A 10-plus-year-old French Bulldog, Walter, has been a patient of KSV from the Upper East Side with his family since he was a puppy, as was Stanley before him. Walter will return to KSV for a short Summer Pet Vacation and again in August for a day admission and procedures. We appreciate the generations of pets and families who place their trust in our team's care.

Our Beautiful Senior Feline of the Day is Macduff! A graceful and energetic 13-year-old Maine Coone, Macduff, was happy to get home and relax after waiting for the heavy rainstorm to pass last night. During his discharge appointment, we reviewed results of his lab work, echocardiogram, blood pressure, abdominal ultrasound, and ongoing treatment plan for hypertension and acute on chronic renal disease. We are all so pleased that Macduff is stable, eating, and feeling better again under medical therapy and the best of loving home care provided by his mom! ❤️
