This is Layla, the sweet little Min Pin mix. She can be a bit barky... she is shy with certain strangers and she barks to keep them away; she barks at the window at passersby; she barks when the kids are playing too wildly and she feels she needs to settle things down... when she needs to express herself, barking is her go-to. Compounding the issue, there are two other dogs in the household, so when she barks she sets everyone off, and their barking further fuels hers; it's an unfortunate feedback loop.

When working with issues in a multi-dog household, the trick is to treat the instigator first. If Layla didn't bark, it's likely that the other two wouldn't either. Still, there is no single fix for barking, as barking means different things in different circumstances. For fear barking, you need to relieve the fear; for demand barking, you need to withhold attention until a better behavior is offered; and so on.

Each dog has a rich, wonderful personality that is expressed through their behaviors. Resolving the behaviors that are an expression of fear or anxiety is not the same for any two dogs. This spicy girl is Ginger! She was recently adopted into her loving furever family. There are a couple of other dogs in the family, one elderly little dog who Ginger is respectful of and careful with. But the other is a middle-aged large dog, and Ginger thinks he is her assigned playmate. So this rambunctious gal is badgering him to play with her with her inexhaustible energy, putting a strain on their relationship and also affecting his happiness.

Bringing a new canine member into the household is bound to have repercussions on everyone in the family, resident dogs included. The needs of each individual dog must be met to keep the peace and happiness. In the case of Ginger, she needs to get her energy needs met without relying on the other canine family members to meet them. Instead, she needs playdates with other like-minded players or she needs other outlets that will tire physically her. Further, training and puzzles will expel her mental energy, which is also an important component for a physically and mentally healthy pooch.
