Dog Training - Sue Battel

Dog Training - Sue Battel I am a valued member of Pampered Pet Sitting .My philosophy does not include dominance or submission. It focuses on developing RESPECT.

I have been a valued member of the VCA Maple Shade Animal Hospital for 18 years. My background as a certified behavioral therapist, along with many years working within the animal hospital, gives me a unique perspective on animal care. Twenty-five years ago I apprenticed under three different dog trainers over a course of five years. I have been involved in training search and rescue dogs, narcoti

cs and police dogs, and schutzhund training. I have even worked with a pure bred wolf for two years. During this time, I began to formulate my own programs based on my philosophy of RESPECT. My goal for you and your dog is not one that includes submission, fear or domination. Instead, I can help you forge a bond with your pet that most owners could only dream of having. Love, praise, patience and consistency are the hallmarks of my program and the keys to its success. Through a personalized program tailored towards your individual pet’s needs, I will teach you how to modify ANY behavioral issues your dog may be having to maximize their success. PROGRAMS OFFERED:

PRIVATE LESSONS- Our private training program is a personalized program designed for behavior modification, as well as a way to teach you how to reach the highest goals you have for your dogs. Some concerns are better dealt with on a one-on-one basis. We teach owners how to be comfortable with- and not embarrassed by- their dog’s behavior at a friend’s house, at home with company or out for a walk. What most owners don’t realize is that serious behavioral problems, such as fearfulness and aggression, CAN be dealt with, so we design our programs for those issues as well. In our private training sessions we set our clients and their best friends up for GREAT success!!! AGILITY DOG TRAINING- An advanced level of dog training designed to develop stronger communication levels between dog and owner while teaching both a higher level of teamwork. This eight week program will find your pet mastering dog walks, weave poles, tunnels and much more! Under the guidance of trainer Sue Battel, you will have the opportunity to spend quality time with your pet while channeling his or her behavior in a positive and fun-filled direction. CANINE GOOD CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATE- Every owner wants to think that their well-trained dog is a good canine citizen. I can make sure your dog is ready to take the test and qualify for the AKC Canine Good Citizenship Certification. PUPPY CLASSES- Our puppy kindergarten classes are the perfect place to start if you are a first time dog owner or have not raised a puppy for several years. Your puppy will learn basic commands and you will learn helpful tips for housebreaking, chewing and biting. Puppies must be 8-10 weeks old and immunized with their first DHLPP booster. Classes are one hour each over a six week session. It’s the perfect opportunity for your puppy to learn good manners while socializing and playing. WHAT SETS US APART:

Our affiliation with a well- respected animal hospital
You work exclusively with one highly skilled trainer who designed the program- not with apprentices
Our training program is strictly “on leash” training. Your pets are too precious to risk having them hurt while following their instinct to chase a rabbit into traffic, etc. Training takes place in either our climate controlled indoor space or, weather permitting, our fully enclosed outdoor area. OUR PHILOSOPHY:

LET THEM BE DOGS
LET THEM LIVE LIFE AND ENJOY IT
YOU CAN NEVER LOVE A DOG TOO MUCH

PROFESIONAL DOG TRAINING.....EMPATHY.....PASSION......SEEING THEIR SOULS...... I am a big believer that professional dog training should always be about the soul of the dog and keeping their souls safe and happy. I believe that as a professional dog trainer this life journey should always be about the family learning how to train their own dog and teaching the owner why the dog is behaving the way it is and how to help the dog but not in a way that will cause fear and pain to the dog.
Professional dog trainers are supposed to be kind and we are supposed to be the voice for the dog as the dog really has no voice. The dog no matter how bad we teach/ treat them will always do whatever we ask even if it is unacceptable for us to hurt them.
I with every single dog that comes into my life look into their eyes and see their souls and what runs through my head is......how can anyone in the dog training business ever put an electric shock collar on the dog and NOT see the fear this causes!!! The trainers who advertise " no harsh neck corrections" or who advertise " positive reinforcement " training methods yet STILL use an electric shock collar is just wrong in every way!
There is literally NOTHING POSITIVE about an electric shock collar as matter a fact this method IS NEGATIVE REENFORCEMENT!!! Then to be able to look into the helpless dogs eyes and be ok with this I will never understand!
I do know how this works as I when I first started my career and was uneducated was told to use this collar on a dog not knowing what was about to happen and there was only seven levels of shock but now there is THIRTYLEVELS OF PAIN. The second the dog was shocked she screamed and ran away and hid behind a car shaking with such fear in her eyes.
This was the only time I had been a part of this type of training since then I advocate against this type of training. This journey should always be about the dogs safety both physically and mentally!!! This journey should NEVER be about the trainer keeping the dog and training the dog and sending the dog back!
We as professional dog trainers already know how to train dogs and we do not own the dogs that are boarding and training this journey should always have the owner walking by the side of their dog in a SAFE HAPPY process!!!
There are so many different trainers in the world anymore with so many different styles of training and that's ok as long as they are not charging thousands of dollars for training and they are not hurting the dog in the process!!!
The dog training program that you seek should fit YOUR needs and YOUR goals NOT the trainers which can be as simple as housebreaking and simple manners to listening out in the real world. This MUST BE ABOUT THE OWNER AND THEIR DOG and always about building the most amazing connection with their owners!!!
So look for a professional dog trainer who is empathetic and who actually connects with your dog and you not one who takes the dog away from you during a consultation!!!
The trainer should never be afraid of the dog and the more years of experience can be a better fit. I also recommend to look really hard for the remote in the hand of the handler as they seem to try to hide them now and ask if they use electric shock collars and if the answer is yes even if they say " But not at first " you really should look elsewhere. Please keep your dogs soul safe and teach with your heart and love and don't kill your pocket either.

See this is what professional dog training is about! Never dominance Never an electric shock collar but always about love structure and a happy family!❤

This is Rev. He is a just-under-a-year old Bernedoodle and he "has no manners" (his mom's words, not mine! 🤣). He is a sweet boy with a LOT of energy. After an hour long session (including brain breaks, of course) of channeling that energy, Rev was laying down, tongue out. He was tired and from all of thinking we made him do. 🤯 And Rev's mom was happy that even the dog walker noticed his calm behavior!

Training is not just making your dog "do tricks." And it's not about dominance. It's for having people over and not having to worry about your dog jumping all over your guests. It's for being able to enjoy a nice walk with your best friend without hurting your shoulder from all of the pulling. It's being able to bake cookies and let them cool on the counter without fear of a vet visit after. It's being able to take a shower without worrying about your furniture being chewed. Training is for you and your dog to have a better, more peaceful, relationship so you both can have a fuller life.

Struggling with your dog? Please reach out. I'd love to talk with you!

MAYA'S JOURNEY......SAVING A BEAUTIFUL SOUL.....I am honored to share the life journey of Maya who is a year and a half old mix breed rescued from Texas a year ago.
I have known Maya's family for years and when they adopted her they expected to get a puppy that would play and just love her new family but unfortunately things went the complete opposite way.
Maya from day one was a shell of a puppy that was so incredibly afraid of everyone and everything. Maya wouldn't get off the sofa in one specific corner not to eat drink or even go potty.
Maya did start to bond to her momma but not any of the three men in the family. So her momma reached out to me and when I first met Maya she hid under the chair her momma sat in with a level of fear I can't even put into words.
I immediately recommended Prozac because even with my knowledge and experience with these issues I knew we couldn't do this alone. We also knew that there was a very high chance that this is part of her DNA genetic issue as well but we didn't want to give up on her.
Maya's family accepted that they may never be able to walk her but the only thing they really wanted was to help her soul get as much peace as possible and live as fear free a life as possible.
They have been so accepting of her limits so we began their journey and yes its been a long journey but the changes in Maya have been nothing short of amazing!!!
Maya will walk around the house now and when she comes to class she plays and has SO much fun but there is still that embedded fear in her soul so we talked about getting her a housemate . We talked about how this may help with her confidence.
We however had no idea how she would be around another dog so we introduced her to Cece and it was a heartwarming greeting. So her family decided to go save another life and Saturday they rescued Carlie from the Animal Orphanage and the connection that they both have made is amazing!!!
They are learning to bond and develop a relationship and yes there are challenges so I am in constant contact with her family but WOW how much Maya came out of her shell!
I have nothing but the highest level of respect for her family as they have the kindest hearts and all they want is the best for Maya and are very accepting of her limits. The fact that they decided to save another life to help her soul just speaks volumes of how beautiful this family really is and we should all learn from them!
So this is the beginning of another beautiful journey now with two souls and I am SO deeply honored to be a part of their journey. I will continue to share updates! I have said this before but THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I BECAME A PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINER!!!!!

05/24/2026

DOG TRAINING IN A FACILITY.....DOES THIS ACTUALLY WORK...... So there are so many different types of professional dog training programs and professional dog trainers are at this point a dime a dozen. There is much like doctors professional dog trainers who may train in a very similar way but we all have our own points of training we may follow.
I want to clear up if by bringing your dog to a dog training facility will this really help with your dog's behavior at the house and outside in the real world. I have heard clients say to me " I wish you could see how they act at home ".
So what clients need to understand is if the dog trainer has the proper training and studies in their lives and have raised or adopted their own dogs and have years of experience as a professional dog trainer then yes we all really do know and understand every behavior that is described to us. The dog will also put on their " Best behavior " when the trainer is in the home with them just like kids put on the " Best behavior " when around their teachers.
So the truth is YES ABSOLUTELY if done properly then taking your dog to a dog training facility WILL SOLVE your problems at home AND in the REAL WORLD! I have been a professional dog trainer for just over forty years and I did work for a trainer who did the " Board and train" programs as well as private training and group puppy classes and in all honesty the " Board and train " programs will always work for the trainer but we already know how to train dogs but to transfer this to the owner when the owner was not on this journey with their dog really is not very successful and is incredibly expensive.
I set up my programs for REAL LIFE SITUATIONS and YES I do put my clients in REAL LIFE SITUATIONS but only when they are ready because I will never set my clients up for failure or the dog up for negativity. I do work in a beautiful training facility and I start my clients there and when ready we go outside!!!
I have worked for an animal hospital for thirty eight years and I have seen way too many dogs that have been hit by cars and clients injured by their dog bolting through doors so I address all of these issues and more and my success rate just speaks for itself.
This is however a team effort which means you can take your dog to the best dog trainer but if you do not do your homework there is not a single dog training program that will work. So it's very important to ask questions like what is the trainers experience and how many years? Then what is their philosophy? Do they ever use electric shock collars and if so well you really should look elsewhere because this is NEGATIVITY REENFORCEMENT and causes fear pain and at times burns in their necks!!!
The other question is if they use training treats are they using them for literally everything? I will use training treats but definitely not for everything and never forever because this life journey should be built on the bond love and connection with the owner and dog not with the food in the owners hand!!!
So YES the success rate CAN BE HIGH by going to a training room if you find the right trainer and if the programs are individualized to every dogs own personality and the owners lifestyle and goals with their dog! Just listen for terms like " alpha" or " dominance " or " submission " because this is bullying the dog into what you want and again please remember there are enough POSITIVE TRAINING METHODS out there so there is NO REASON to hurt the dog with an electric shock collar!

I want to talk today about so much bad information that has been brought to my attention from my clients. They either read it online or had been told by a trainer or watched videos but they are not getting the results they believed they would get . I will start with jumping up on people.
The newest very unsuccessful method when a puppy/ dog jumps up on anyone they owner is told to stand up if they are sitting and turn their back and when not if but when this doesn't work they are told to walk away from the puppy/ dog.
So the issue with this is when you turn your back you are technically submitting to the dog and when the dog continues to jump on you and becomes worse and you walk away the very clear message is you are the subordinate and the dog is in complete control of you.
This then builds an even more hectic relationship with the owner and the dog because the dog will continue this unwanted behavior and the frustration caused by this method is unnecessary. The other issue is also creates anxiety because your dog just wants to be with you not separated!
I have had clients also been told by other trainers that when company comes over the company is to completely ignore the dog until the dog calms down and responds to commands which again builds a major frustration for the dog and absolutely creates an even worse behavior.
So by not addressing the behavior directly and by literally ignoring the behavior which is the very clear message you will create a horrible relationship. The dog learns what is acceptable in their behavior by actually dealing with the unwanted behavior in the act of the behavior you don't want. So the answer is keep the dog on the leash and as the dog jumps up you very gently guide the dog downward and say the command " Off" without hurting the dog and act normal don't ignore the dog and with time and patience this will stop! So what we want to do is teach the dog how to make the right choices.
I have received a lot of calls from clients with puppies and they have been seriously miss led by information given to them about giving the puppies either a frozen wash cloth for teething or to keep the puppy busy fill a paper towel roll with treats fold the ends and let them work on getting the treats out or putting treats in a box with towels or paper products and treats and let them work for the treats. So what is not said is that by using these horrible methods you are actually encouraging your dog to chew on cardboard boxes and potentially swallowing places that will cause an obstruction.
The encouragement of chewing on any cloth material is the worst idea because this encourages dogs to chew on blankets and kitchen towels and the socks you wear. There are what is called " Enrichment games" that are specifically made and safe for dogs that you can buy if you want to keep them busy or you can hide treats around the house and teach them how to find them but these methods will never encourage unwanted behavior like chewing on objects they shouldn't.
You should never encourage dogs to chew on anything that will cause horrible habits and will cause an obstruction. I have seen way too many exploratory surgeries from dogs swallowing towels or underwear or peaces of blankets so please do not ever use these methods.
I just started with a puppy who was working with another trainer and I asked what have they been learning and they said they had been told that one exercise was to put a treat on the floor in front of the puppy and the puppy can not touch it until the owner gives it permission.
So the " Leave it " exercise should NEVER be trained with their own reward--their own treats!!! This is very confusing and very unfair as the puppy will get a double message of " NO you can't have it now-- then ok now you can " ! Think about what you are telling this poor puppy!!!
This is not a mentally healthy exercise and using treats as a reward should ALWAYS be just that ---THE REWARD! Will they learn it eventually? Yes of course but how much teasing and negativity is involved before they get it??
The command " Leave it" should be taught with objects they should not put in their mouth like towels or tissues or sneakers but NEVER their own treats. Please use common sense and do not give mixed messages!!!! This is a post for educational reasons and to try and teach healthy communication skills. .

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HALE.......So today is my beautiful girl Hale's 4thbirthday. It will be four years in July since I brought her home. This poor soul has had to fight for everything from the day she was born. Her momma passed away a week after she was born so her breeder had to bottle feed her. He did his best with socializing her with his females he had that had just whelped their litter but I knew it was going to be a difficult time with her because of her momma passing away.
So fast forward to picking her up. I at the time trusted my breeder and believed that she was going to have a stable temperament like Cece even though they have different parents.
I met her father who is absolutely beautiful but my gut kept saying not to trust him. I wasn't feeling it when I met her and was emotionally back and forth about bringing her home but just couldn't put my finger on it.
So I decided to make her a part of my family anyway and took her home. I saw from day one as an 8 week old puppy she was so emotionally detached. It was like no one was there and this sadden me. She attacked Cece the first night I brought her home when I fed them just flew across the kitchen body slammed her in such an aggressive way and went to Cece's food and I knew right then I adopted a major challenge.
So fast forward to a year and a half old and a lot of time and training and she still had major issues that I couldn't fix because this is a genetic problem. I saw her lunging at people and dogs from the day I brought her home.
I saw posts that others who had half siblings to her with the same behaviors. I had a major dog fight in my house and had to make the decision to put her on Prozac.
I reached out to her breeder thinking he would listen to everything I said about her genetic issues and stop breeding her father as he was the common denomination to all of the litters but instead of listening he played the blame game saying her issues were my fault and I didn't raise or train her right.
This of course makes me sad because he still breeds her father and sells his puppies for a lot of money. I however looked at my Hale and promised her I wouldn't fail her and I have not. So four years later and she is living the best life and is very helpful in class as well!!!
I absolutely adore this beautiful soul so to my baby girl I just want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY HALE! I LOVE YOU ❤️

EXTREME HEAT AND KEEPING OUR PETS SAFE.....So we are starting day two of extreme heat and our first heat wave of the year which worries me about how hot this summer may be.
We must use common sense when it comes to keeping our pets safe. We must first understand that non of us has had any time for our bodies to acclimate to the warm weather so this can be a shock to our system.
I have sadly seen heat strokes in dogs over my career working for a veterinarian and I have to say it is such a horrible way for the dog to suffer through and they do not always survive a heat stroke and the thing to understand is heat strokes do not have to happen to our dogs.
So today I want to share how to keep our dogs safe and how to appropriately handle the situation if your dog does over heat. We must start by realizing that a dogs nature body temperature is between 101-102 and because dogs don't have sweat glands and they don't have easy cooling mechanisms they can start to over heat very easily and as soon as their body temperature raises to 103 they are already starting to over heat.
So we must pay very close attention to the weather reports and once the temperatures raise up to 75 to 80 degrees and higher if we choose to walk our dog in the hottest time of the day we are putting our dog at risk of a heat stroke.
The humidity also will play a part of the risks of a heat stroke as well. So if it is 70 degrees and humid out do not walk your dog in the prime of the day as this will put them at a higher risk of a heat stroke. Please never let your dog on the blacktop as this draws in the heat of the sun and will burn the paws of your dog.
The best time to walk your dog during a heat wave is before 7am and after 8pm but the evening walk should still be super short because we are coming off the heat of the day and the sidewalk is still hot.
The walks even during the coolest times should still be shorter than normal because it is still too hot and if you made plans to do a get together with others and their dogs even at 5pm in a heat wave it is still too dangerous and you should keep your dog at home safe!!!!!
So what do you do if your dog starts to over heat? Well the first is get the dog inside and then put ROOM TEMPERATURE compresses on the dogs neck paws and belly area to SLOWLY bring down the body temperature.
The dangerous thing to do is to put cold water or compresses on the dog to bring the body temperature down too fast as this can cause shock and be dangerous. Try to get your dog to either your veterinarian or emergency veterinarian as soon as possible to get proper medical care if your dog is having a heat stroke.
When walking your dog if he/ she is panting heavy and trying to lay down in the shade or trying to lay down on the grass or starts to walk like he/ she is wobbly and weak get your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible! Please be safe out there!!!! .
