💔 This little guy absolutely breaks our hearts.

Winn Dixie lost his owner when they passed away, suddenly losing his person, his home, and everything familiar. Then it looked like his luck had finally changed — he was adopted, but when Winn Dixie became sick with pneumonia, he was returned to the shelter.

Now this sweet 4-year-old, 22-lb little guy is back in a kennel when what he desperately needs is somewhere quiet to rest, recover, and feel safe.

Winn Dixie is social, wiggly, friendly and fun. He’s already endured losing his person, losing his home, finding another family and then losing that home too when he got sick.

💔 He needed care, not another goodbye.

While in the elevator, waiting to go on their street walk, handler pets Winn and he quickly flinches. Handler then coaxes using a soft voice, and he would become loose and wiggly which he would then accept pets. Throughout the walk, he would relieve himself and not react towards any dogs or people. He is then returned for his assessment - once completed, returned to kennel with no issue.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/12/2026. Bam is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with kitten socialization and helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

EUTH COMMAND!!! SOS!!! LULU!!! 4 YRS OLD 122 LBS!!! A BIG GIRL BUT BEAUTIFUL! THERE DUE TO OWNER;S ALLERGIES. SHE HAS CHERRY EYES AS WELL AS SOME SKIN ALLERGIES. SHE LIVED WITH KIDS 1,10 ,4 AND WAS PLAYFUL OUTGOING ACC SAYS KIDS OVER 13. WITH FAMILIAR AS WELL AS UNFAMILIAR BOTH ON LEASH AND OFF SHE IS SHY AND CONTACT ON HER OWN TERMS, IN ACC SHE GREETS NEUTRALLY. BUT SHY. 💔 Lulu spent four years with her owner. Then suddenly, because they became allergic, Lulu lost the only home and family she knew.
For four years she had familiar people, familiar routines, and the security of belonging. Her owner described her as playful and friendly — that’s the Lulu who existed before her world was turned upside down.

Now she’s frightened and struggling to understand shelter life. She doesn’t know what allergies are. She only knows her person disappeared and everything familiar went with them.

Lulu is just 4 years old. She deserves the opportunity to leave the stress of the shelter behind and show everyone the playful, friendly girl her family knew for years.

She also has cherry eye that will need attention, making getting her into a stable environment even more important.

During her medical exam, Lulu began growling when they attempted to examine her mouth. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home.

ASSESSMENT NOTES
Date of assessment: 7/21/2026

Summary: When brought into the assessment room Lulu was observed to be tense and aloof with handlers. She is not receptive to treats or spray cheese. When the handler approaches with the collar, Lulu retreats from the handler quickly and attempts to hide behind the secondary handler. Due to the high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety displayed. Lulu is not a candidate to receive a handling assessment at this time.

Summary: According to Lulu's previous owner(s), Lulu is shy and prefers contact on her terms with other dogs.

7/23/26: Lulu is introduced to a novel intact male dog and explores the yard seemingly unaware the other dog is present at the gate. She is gently led to the fence and approaches with a neutral frame and low tail with a slightly outstretched neck. She begins giving low wags and engages in nose to nose sniffing through the fence. The other dog is let into the yard and she independently sniffs and when the other dog approaches her she flinches back and tucks her tail, slightly curling her butt away. She disengages without issue and remains neutral in the yard. The other dog approaches again and she tolerates him sniffing her but disengages again. She shakes off and independently explores, remaining aloof to relatively close proximity. When the other dog attempts interaction another time, she flinches back and walks the other direction.

Summary (6): 7/23/26: Lulu is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body, whining as the handler approaches; once she is leashed, Lulu jumps out the kennel and walks out the room. The handler Lulu to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog notes); before the interaction, Lulu sniffs around the yard and the other handlers present. She doesn't respond to the handler when they call her; she shows no interest in treats. After the interaction, the handler brings Lulu inside to be returned. The handler brings Lulu to her kennel, but as it was dirty, they walk her out the room; Lulu then lies down on the ground and baulks when the handler attempts to bring her back to the room. The handler walks Lulu into the room, but Lulu refuses to enter her kennel; the handler attempts to muscle her in, but Lulu places her paws in the kennel and jumps backward. The handler calls for help; they walk her outside to the yard. As the 2nd handler attempts to place a sling under Lulu, she moves away; with a few more attempts, Lulu begins head whipping. As a third handler successfully places a sling under Lulu, she begins to head whip, snarl, snap, and bite the bellyband. When the 1st and the 3rd handler attempt to walk her with a leash and sling, Lulu continues to snarl and snap at the sling. The 2nd handler places another leash on Lulu, and the 4th handler takes the main leash from the 1st handler. All 3 handlers walk Lulu into the building and to her kennel. As the 4th handler attempts to guide Lulu into the kennel she head whips and snaps at the handler. She is quickly placed into kennel and the leashes are removed with a hook.

7/21/26: Lulu is lying down at the back of the kennel. She approaches the front with a neutral body. She is easily leashed and Lulu exits the kennel slowly. She walks down the hallway slowly and is taken out to the street. Lulu continues to walk slowly besides the handler, her tail pressed against her rear. She stops occasionally and sniffs various spots on the ground. She observes a dog but immediately looks away and goes back to sniffing her surroundings. Lulu is taken back to the shelter and is walked to the assessment office. She walks around slowly with a tucked tail. The assessor presents the collar and Lulu flinches, she jumps back and lowers her body. Her tail tucked. Lulu begins to make small grunts as the assessor and handler tried to coax her forward, she does not take treats or high value. Lulu lies down and stays still. The assessment is ended. Lulu is coaxed out of the room with verbal coaxing and gentle leash pressure. She is then slowly walked back to kennel and returned without issue.

She exits kennel without issue and walks through the building with no reactivity. In the yard she is aloof and walks alongside the handler while kept on leash. 7/19/26: Lulu is standing at the front of her kennel with a neutral body when the handler approaches. She is hesitant and is not receptive to treats but allows handler to put the leash on. She exits the kennel calmly and walks slowly out of the room with a lowered head. She shows no interest or reactivity toward neighboring dogs in their kennels as she passes them. In the hallways, Lulu continues following the handler at a slow pace all the way to the yard. Her body remains lowered, with a neutral to slightly tucked tail. She passes dogs in pop-up crates and staff members with no reaction. In the yard, Lulu slowly enters the pen and sniffs certain spot before eventually relieving herself. She remains aloof and is not responsive to handler. She briefly flinches when the leash accidentally touches her back but quickly recovers and continues discovering the pen. When leaving the yard, Lulu walks slightly behind the handler with a neutral body and lowered body. During return, handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Lulu back into her kennel with no issues.

7/18/26: Lulu is lying down in her kennel as the handler approaches, and then slowly stands up. The handler drops treats into her kennel, and she sniffs around and eats them. The 2nd handler uses a squeaker to distract her, but Lulu doesn't pay any interest. The handler brings the leash in and slowly attempts to leash Lulu over her head, but when it makes contact, she flinches and slowly backs away. After a few more attempts, the handler leashes Lulu under her chin and secures the leash. Lulu initially hesitates to exit once the kennel door is opened; after a few minutes, the 2nd handler places a treat lure on the kuranda bed below the kennel, and Lulu slowly steps out to eat, and eventually walks out the kennel. The handler brings Lulu to the yard; throughout the walk, she constantly sniffs around the yard. after entering the pen, she briefly sniffs the handlers. The handler calls her name and use a squeaker to get her attention, but Lulu pays no mind. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Lulu to her kennel.

Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Lulu to be more comfortable with this. Fearful Defensive: Lulu's previous owner states that she may growl or bark when startled. Recently Lulu has been observed to balk while on leash, when a sling is used, Lulu escalates to snarling, snapping, and biting the sling. It is important to move slowly with Lulu, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.

Leash Pulling: Lulu's previous owner states that she pulls hard on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.

Observed Behavior - friendly, sniffing room, walking on leash well, allowed petting and taking treats. Allowed most of medical exam but started growling when trying to look in mouth. Sedated for vaccines and bloodwork due to growling and her size

P = 42 (on dexdorm)
R = 24brpm
BCS 5/9
EENT: Eyes clear, cherry eye OU, moderate waxy debris, no nasal or ocular discharge noted
Oral Exam: mild to moderate tartar accumulation, no oral lesions, p sensitive to oral exam
PLN: No enlargements noted
H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupneic
ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated
U/G: FI, developed v***a and mammary glands, no vaginal discharge
MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, healthy hair coat
CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities
Re**al: externally normal
Wood's Lamp Exam: np

Assessment:
4yo FI Large breed
-cherry eye OU

Prognosis: excellent

Plan:
sedated exam (torb 0.3mg/kg (1.5ml) and dexdorm 7mcg/kg (0.8ml) IM

Monday through Friday: 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday: 11:00 am to 5:00 pm

* NYC ACC RATING SYSTEM *
All adopters/foster go through screening process set by NYCACC, which involves submission of pertinent documents, an interview with ACC adoption counselors, to determine if dog is suitable for the home. Dogs can go beyond Northeastern States as long as the adopters go to the ACC in person to pick up the dog.

Level 1
Dogs can go to homes with little dog experience, with children no younger than 5 years old.

Level 2
Dogs can go to homes with some previous dog experience, and with no children under 5 years old.

Level 3
Dogs can go to homes with more experience, and with no children under 13 years old.

Level 4
Dogs can go to ADULTS ONLY homes with very experienced adopters or fosters

Dogs need to be pulled by a New Hope Rescue, homes would be screened by a New Hope rescue and by the ACC, for suitability. Adopters, fosters need to be highly experienced, and have no children below 18 years of age
