Dogs and dog behavior can be complex - sometimes we need to do more than offer a run-of-the-mill solution. Sometimes, we need to alter the way we train to have the biggest impact on the dog in front of us. With modifying behavior in dogs, the goal is to change their perception of things. We want them to enjoy life and not feel overly emotional about whatever it is that bothers them, and we also want to enjoy life with our dog without the stress of their behavioral concerns. What this means is that training looks different for each and every dog.

Welcome back, Rosie!! Rosie is a graduate from our leash basics group class, and she’s here now for some more specialized work. She can be fearful at times, and needs to do some work around confidence building. We are also going to transition everything she learned on-leash to off-leash (as long as it suits the situation). We’ve been reviewing everything she learned before and starting where that training left off!

Loosely fitted collars are a safety risk when it comes to handling and training dogs - the last thing any of us wants is a dog to suddenly pull and back out of their collar, leaving us holding only a leash and watching a dog that’s running off into the sunset. What you see in this video are different dogs, different programs, and different stages in training - each and every dog that comes through our training programs gets a unique experience. We work on what is most beneficial to YOUR dog. And what your dog needs might be different than any other dog’s needs. That is perfectly fine with us! Our tailored approach is what makes us stand out.

Andie and Maverick are dog reactive while Lola is human reactive. Cooper is a goofy golden that needs basic obedience, and Bluey is a younger dog in need of the same. Rocket needs a behavior modification for being extremely fearful, which makes him reactive. Nova and Memphis resource guard against each other.

There’s absolutely no way we could train each of these dogs the same way and find success. But what’s unfolding for each of them are the steps that we need to take to make them happy and well behaved dogs 😊

The point of me filming this, and several other videos I filmed for Maverick’s owner, was to show her how we had been working around other dogs since Maverick is dog reactive. However, the highlight of my videos has quickly become the way that Maverick takes treats - when he came to training I understood that he wasn’t a big fan of treats. I discovered some that he really likes, but since his tongue is longer than his mouth, he struggles to take them very well. He decided the best way to take them was to chomp them. 🤣🤣 my favorite part of training dogs is learning how they are each different.

Bluey has been working on his heeling, and this is the basic command that we teach for leash walking. Before we can do more advanced things, like walk freely out of the heel, we need to master this first. We are setting up the foundation for this now!

Rocket has been working on his come and place commands - building up an understanding of obedience can go a long way in helping nervous dogs to feel more confident, because we can use these commands in different settings and for different outcomes. While he’s continuing to work on confidence building with separate exercises, it’s all tied in.

Maverick has been exposed to several commands during his life, so I’ve been observing the extent to which he understands certain things to know where our baseline for training will be. He’s also a really smart dog, so it only took a few tries of me calling him like this for him to want to come to me - and this is the basis for his recall!

Andie says “yes feed me please while I sit here”. Her and I have been working some simple sit stays like this to build the foundation for everything she is about to learn. I begin building “stays” and using release words as soon as possible in training. Dogs must be released from their stay at some point, and if we work with them in this way, they understand that there is an end to what we are asking them to do. Let’s face it - we all like knowing there’s an end to work!
