The place to learn about off track Thoroughbreds The bulk of what we do is provide care and medical treatment. We have a strong volunteer program.

We rehabilitate injured ex racehorses OTTBs (Off Track Thoroughbreds) These horses may come from the track- mainly Gulfstream Race Track, but also owner surrender or seized by authorities. Horses may be available for adoption once they have healed. Education and Outreach also play a big part in what we do. Check our our website for a full list of what we do and our available horses. PSA parents getting a horse for their kids!

Part 1

Here are some do’s and don’ts starting w DO

✅ Do- Find a horse that’s the proper match for your child. That can be skill level, size, age.

✅ Do- take someone with you and go physically see the horse. The person going with you should ideally have quite a bit of experience with this.

A friend that owned a horse as a kid or someone who just started taking riding lessons, might know about horses, but being able to evaluate a horse and determine if it’s a good match can be difficult. It’s really easy to get the wrong horse because they’re just so darn cute.

✅ Do- consider your budget and your kids size - Generally, a really big horse is going to eat a lot more than a small horse. People often think that a small Horse or Pony is cheaper than a big horse.

Go through the steps. The vet and farrier and board all cost the same no matter what size the animal -this adds up quick. Find pricing in your local area and estimate what this will cost on a yearly basis.

✅ Do consider- What is a realistic timeline to keep the horse or pony?

Often horses bought just for a child may not have lifelong homes

Depending on the age/size of the kids that pony might be too small for them in a few years. Giving away a beloved pony can be hard on kids. Do what works best for your family

A young horse will still be around when the child goes away to school or gets married- so what does that look like? Trying to rehome a mid aged horse can be hard and not work out well for the horse

✅ Do consider- if riding is really important- that horse can become non rideable for a variety of reasons. Sooner or later in life most horses can no longer carry someone. Leasing and lessons are strong contenders to ownership

It can be a common experience that someone buys a horse for $5k or $20k or any price and it may not be rideable even a few years down the road. That’s a lot of cabbage.

✅ Do- talk to other parents. Learn about their experience. What round they do different?

I’ll write up some more snd maybe do a video. They are so numerous to list. But if getting a horse for your family is something you are considering:

The best thing to go is make a solid plan. Do your research. It’s easy to let out emotions take over. Especially if a horse is in some kind of distress at its current home. The urge to help is real.

Why “NO” to visits?
And how to get to see and meet horses

Rescues, sanctuaries, riding stables.

When people want to see and meet horses they often reach out. Often via social media

If you are getting a “we don’t allow visits’ it can be frustrating

But there are some real reasons behind this

Having unknown people on property can put the horses and caretakers at risk. In the age of social media, anyone can create a fake profile.

Letting unknown people from the internet on your property has risks.

People on your property can also create liability

It’s possible that people are scoping out the property to return and steal horses or equipment- we had a rash of horse thefts some years back.

It presents a real problem to people who just want to see or be around horses. Now a days that’s mostly do t thru some sort of riding program or lease program.

One thing you might not think about but is a great way to do this is to go to a local show - of any kind. Barrels, reining, jumping, dressage, polo .

Watch the show, see the horses, think about getting involved or volunteering for a local show in some capacity

So get out and have some fun, maybe volunteer some time and get your feet wet!

Does everyone have a treat for their horse? And you know if a horse is going to give you a trick it will probably involve a vet bill 🤣

Humidity is 81 percent snd the mosquitos are fierce. Happy Friday! 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve already hosed the horses off. Here is a picture of Cypress. He would like a permanent fountain to be installed 🤣. He’s such a good boy. But hot! Send snow!
