Things to keep in mind when it's hot:
1. Dogs' body temperature is 101 F, 3 degrees higher than humans, so when you're hot they are already hotter.
2. Dogs cool themselves primarily by panting although they have sweat glands on their noses and paw pads.
3. Dogs with long noses take in more cooling air when they breath, dogs with short noses like Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boxers can't do that well.
4. The coat of long haired dogs can actually help keep them cool so shaving them down is not a good idea. DO brush out the shedding undercoat with a slicker brush or grooming rake.
5. Dogs don't always slow down when it's hot, as a responsible dog owner make sure your dog takes cool-off breaks.
6. Keep fresh water accessible to them, some dogs like ice cubes.
7. Wading pools where dogs can stand in water help them cool off.
