This sweet boy was found on the eastern side of the 395 freeway overpass 2 miles outside of Lind wandering east into no man's land.
Though we don't usually take dogs from outside city limits, we do make exceptions when we have the availability to do so.
If you can share this and hopefully their owners see him that would be so helpful!

💙 Happy Adoption Day, Bolt! 💙
There are days in rescue that remind us exactly why we do this, and today is one of them.
When Bolt first came to us, he was scared, skittish, and unsure of the world around him. Trust didn't come easy, and every step forward was a victory worth celebrating. Through patience, kindness, and a whole lot of love, Bolt slowly began to believe that people could be safe and that life could be good.
Today, that journey has led him exactly where he belongs, with a family of his very own. 🏡❤️
Watching Bolt transform from a frightened dog into one ready to embrace a new life has been nothing short of incredible. We are beyond proud of him, grateful for everyone who helped him along the way, and yes... we're crying some very happy tears today.
Congratulations, Bolt. Your happily-ever-after starts now. We couldn't be happier for you and your new family. 🐾💕

Every bag of food, every dollar donated, every share, every ounce of support matters more than most people realize. ❤️🐾
Thank you to everyone who donated dog and cat food, whether financially or by physically dropping supplies off to us. Your support helped us through a time where our kennels were full and the need was high, and while this push helped tremendously, food donations are always an ongoing need for the animals in our care.
This week, we were also able to transport FIVE dogs to our amazing rescue partners at SpokAnimal and Spokane Humane Society. These partnerships are absolutely vital. They help create space so we can continue taking in dogs in need and keep the revolving door of rescue moving. Without transports and rescue partnerships, many of these dogs could be waiting far longer for homes, especially while we are still limited in public access and rely heavily on adoption events and online exposure.
And now, we have THREE incredible dogs currently looking for homes through handspawswa.org
• Gracie — the sweetest girl, returned through no fault of her own after her adopter experienced health complications.
• Pancake — a handsome young German Shepherd who honestly could pass as Gracie’s brother.
• Bolt — transferred to us from LAFP to continue his socialization and training journey, and he has an incredible story.
Please share, donate if you can, and help us continue making space for the next animals who need us. 🖤

Teaching “lay down” doesn’t have to be frustrating! 🐾

In this video, I’m using a leg barrier and a food lure to help guide the dog into the motion of laying down in a way that feels natural and easy to understand. The goal is to help the dog learn the *movement* first before we start asking for the behavior more independently.

A few important things to remember when using a lure:

✨ The lure is temporary.
We use it to teach the motion, but we don’t want the dog to become dependent on always seeing food first. As your dog starts understanding the behavior, begin fading the lure by using the same hand motion without food, then reward *after* they complete the behavior.

✨ Look for consistency before progressing.
Training isn’t about getting it right once, it’s about your dog understanding the behavior consistently in different repetitions and environments. If they can perform the behavior smoothly several times in a row, that’s when you know they’re truly learning.

✨ Keep sessions short and positive.
Success comes from clear communication, timing, and repetition, not drilling the behavior over and over.

Every dog learns differently, so don’t be afraid to slow things down and make the process easy for them to win. 🖤

Bolt’s journey hasn’t been easy, but watching him learn that people can be safe has been one of the most rewarding experiences. ❤️

Bolt was found as a stray in rural Grant County and taken in by LAFP before going into foster care. His foster did an incredible job earning his trust and giving him the space he needed to start feeling comfortable. Eventually, Bolt gained enough confidence to explore the yard, play fetch, and interact with her dog, but human connection was still very scary for him.

Handling pressure on a leash caused panic responses, and Bolt would “crocodile” when he felt trapped or overwhelmed. This behavior isn’t defiance, it’s fear. Dogs like Bolt survive by protecting themselves, and trust has to be built slowly, fairly, and consistently.

That’s when we stepped in to help continue his rehabilitation journey.

With a long line, positive reinforcement, structure, patience, and allowing him to move at his own pace, Bolt has been learning how to exist safely in new environments without feeling threatened. He spends time hanging out with me while I clean, observes daily routines, and is finally starting to understand that he doesn’t have to be afraid anymore.

And he is doing SO well. 🖤

Bolt is available for adoption, but he will need a calm, patient person or family willing to continue building his confidence through trust, consistency, and kindness. He doesn’t need perfection, he just needs someone with a gentle heart who understands that healing takes time.

Dogs like Bolt are worth every ounce of patience. Watching them choose trust after surviving fear is something truly special.
