Humane Society of Monroe County

The Humane Society of Monroe County (HSMC) was founded in 1954 by Monroe County residents who were concerned for the welfare of the companion animals in our community. For approximately 50 years, the society has operated a shelter where stray, abandoned or surrendered animals receive care – food, shelter, medical attention and love – until they can be placed in a permanent home. The society also p

romotes the humane treatment of animals through education; attempts to re-unite lost animals with their owners and provides a subsidized low or no cost spay/neuter program for Monroe County residents on disability, Medicaid, social security or other income restrictions (contact the admin. office for more information or to see if you might qualify for this program.) The HSMC is a non-profit, no-kill organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. We employ a small but dedicated staff to care for the animals, operate the shelter and conduct our outreach programs and events. Currently, the society does not receive government funding. Our budget is comprised of fundraising events, memberships, donations, cage sponsors and adoptions. A dedicated group of volunteers provides invaluable assistance in conducting our community outreach programs. The Humane Society of Monroe County is an independent Humane Society. We are not part of, nor do we receive any support from the Michigan Humane Society, American Humane Association or the Humane Society of the United States. We only exist because of support of the people of Monroe County and friends in surrounding areas. FACEBOOK CODE OF CONDUCT:

Tomorrow is our annual car show at the shelter. We will have two Bounce Houses and one waterslide as well as four different kind of food and dessert trucks. The event is from 2 to 6 and all are welcome. We will have other vendors with us as well along with the live band contest and raffles.

We have adoptable dogs out walking and will be taking applications for adoptions as well.

We really hope to see there.

Attention Beagle Lovers!!

Meet Bowie! He is a 15 yr old sweet beagle. He has had the same owner and he can no longer stay with his family because of his mom’s medical problems.

He has all his shots, fixed, likes dogs and kids and we are not sure about cats.

I spent some time with him today and he has all the old man lumps and bumps but he still has lots of love to give.

We have called rescues and we waiting for a response but I would rather he went to home that will love him for the remainder of his life.

Bowie will be at our car show tomorrow if anyone wants to meet this sweet old man. He is so confused about why he is there and where his mommy is.

Please consider adopting Bowie! Your life will most definitely be better with him around.

If we not find a home him a home I will be fostering him so he will not have to stay at the shelter. I lost two elderly dogs this year and would never want that for them. Unfortunately I work 6-7 days a week and long hours so this will only be a temporary placement for Bowie.

Please help me find Bowie a home.

Today there are so many volunteers here enjoying the nice weather and many of our animals are so happy!! Looking back to 2025 we had over 1900 hours of volunteers this does not include any that were here for community service. There were also 32 different dogs that enjoyed the Doggy Day Out program, some got to go multiple times! We also have had trades people here to repair things and groups from businesses who come for a day and others like Gerdau who donate, made benches and send a work crew, we are a big part of the community, and the community is a big part of us! Every day is a new beginning and hopefully better than the last I can never say thank you enough to all the wonderful people who give a piece of their hearts🥰

I thought I would try to give a rundown of the week. Orchids and onions style. Orchids to the people who donated money, food, pet items and their time, it means the world. Onions to the lady who wants 2 intact kitties so they can have kittens, if only she had a tiny clue to the misery she would inflict. Orchids to the mother and daughter who brought in a cat because we had an open cage but upon realizing the cat was about to give birth signed up as fosters took it home to give birth and left a 500. Donation. Onions to the people who abandoned this dog we euthanized her today after just a few days. She was sweet and I hope loved for most of her life, but she also had cancer. So much pain, we did what we could but she had progressed to constant vomiting and could not keep pain meds down. A very expensive surgery to remove a leg with no guarantees, more pain, more stress, no foster home. The sad part is we were told the owner died and instead of someone perhaps family stepping in she was just dumped. Extra onions to this situation but orchids to people who will do better! And more orchids to those who will come see us Sunday.
