🎃 NO TRICKS, JUST SAFE PUPS! Spooky Season is here! 👻🐾

With Halloween tomorrow, our neighborhoods will be busy with trick-or-treaters, fun costumes, and lots of doorbell ringing! While it’s a fun night for us, all the extra excitement can sometimes be a little overwhelming (or tempting) for our furry friends.

Before the festivities kick off, here are three quick reminders to keep your pups safe and happy this weekend:

🍫 Keep the candy bowl far out of reach: Halloween treats (especially chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free candies containing xylitol) are highly toxic to dogs. Keep the candy bowls up high on a counter or in a closed pantry, and make sure kiddos know not to share their haul with the family pet!

🚪 Create a cozy, quiet retreat: With the front door opening and closing and people in costume coming by, some dogs can get startled or anxious. Set them up in a secure, quiet room with their favorite bed, some soft background music, and a tasty chew or stuffed toy to keep them distracted and relaxed.

🏷️ Check those collars and microchips: All that back-and-forth at the front door means more chances for a quick slip-out. Make sure your dog is wearing a collar with updated ID tags, and take a quick moment to verify your microchip contact information is current just in case!

Shelter Hours Update for Wednesday, October 28th 🐾

Please note that HSACM will have a delayed opening today. We will open our doors at 12:00 PM (Noon) so our staff, volunteers, and board members can attend memorial services and pay our respects to Jeffrey Hicks, beloved husband of our President, Ellen Hicks.

We appreciate your understanding and grace as our shelter family takes this morning to honor Jeff’s life, support Ellen, and say our goodbyes.

Normal operations and adoption center hours will resume promptly at 12:00 PM today. Thank you for your continued support and love. ❤️🕊️

🎉 MISSION FAILED SUCCESSFULLY: WESLEY IS NOW YOSHI! 🦖💚

His new mom showed up at the shelter with one strict rule for herself: "I am only here to volunteer. I am NOT taking a dog home today."

Wesley took that as a personal challenge—and won by a landslide. 🐾🏆

Between the sweet eyes, the charm offensive, and that undeniable shelter-dog magic, her defenses didn't stand a chance. She walked in expecting to walk a few dogs, and walked out with a soulmate, an empty passenger seat filled, and a brand new name for her boy: Yoshi!

He has officially traded kennel life for soft beds, endless attention, and the ultimate title of volunteer-turned-foster-fail champion. Seeing connections like this unfold right in front of us is the reason we show up every single day. 🏠✨

Happy tails, Yoshi! Keep living your best life and soaking up every ounce of that couch time.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of a treasured member of our HSAC family, Jeffrey Hicks, beloved husband of our President, Ellen Hicks.

Jeff was truly one of a kind—an incredible storyteller who was never at a loss for words, a gifted musician, and a friend to everyone he met. His warmth, quick wit, and generous spirit brought so much light to those around him. The world has truly lost one of its greats.

🩷 BIG PAWS, TINY TOYS, MAXIMUM CHAOS! 🩷

We cracked wide open the communal toy chest and gave our girl Melee full run of the play yard to pick whatever caught her eye. We braced for impact, expecting her to haul out a massive heavy-duty rope, a giant tire, or whatever oversized gear matched her supersized frame. Instead, this hilarious powerhouse bypassed every giant toy in the crate, delicately rooted all the way down to the bottom, and emerged strutting like a proud runway model with literally the most microscopic toy in the entire box! Seeing this giant, beautiful sweetheart proudly prancing around the grass showing off a prize smaller than her nose had the whole crew rolling.

Melee completely runs on cartoon logic, and that giant, ridiculous personality is guaranteed to keep you laughing all day long. Underneath the goofy grin is an affectionate, loyal girl who brings absolute joy to every single run in the yard and just wants a family to share the fun with!

💙🐾 A HUGE Best Buy Shoutout! 🐾💙

We had an amazing crew from our local Best Buy team stop by the adoption center today to lend a helping hand! From tackling organization projects around the shelter to giving our pups some extra leash time and quality one-on-one socialization, these folks jumped right in and brought so much great energy to our facility.

Community support like this makes such a positive impact for our shelter pets while they wait for their forever homes. There were plenty of wagging tails, happy faces, and lots of love to go around! 🐕✨

A genuine refuge doesn't just offer an umbrella; it provides solid ground, unwavering protection, and the reassurance that you no longer have to face the cold wind alone.

That very promise of shelter and renewal is what guides our mission every single day. The dogs who enter our gates often arrive straight out of their own personal storms—confused, exhausted, and wondering if warmth is ever going to come. From their very first night with us, our goal is to be that bridge between the storm and the rest of their lives: a secure haven filled with dedicated care, steady affection, and nourishing meals while we help them find the families they were always meant to have. 🐾 Huge Volunteer Thanks! 🍁

A massive thank you to the incredible volunteers who spent their Saturday making a direct impact for our shelter pups! We had two fantastic crews on site today: the ULM Pharmacy students and DBS from Sterlington High. Thanks to their energy and dedication, our dogs got to stretch their legs on long walks, enjoy play yard time, and soak up some quality socialization.

On top of giving our dogs so much love, these hard-working teams rolled up their sleeves to help us hang tarps around the kennels to prep our facility for the upcoming cooler weather. Community support like this keeps our shelter running smoothly and ensures our pups stay warm, comfortable, and cared for.
