Get Ready, Missoula! The Big Day is Tomorrow! ❤️🐾

We are bringing some new dogs that just arrived today! We will be at the Missoula PetSmart on Reserve Street from noon to 4 p.m. for PetSmart's big "Adopt Joy" event.

We have a wonderful list of pups who will be there, including: Aspen, Beaker, Birch, Cocoa Pup, Cori, Couch, Dali, Darrell, David, Ducky, Ellie, Eve, Galloway, Ginger, Julian,
Koba, Pete, Reba, Reena, Rissa, Rosco, Rowdy, Sassy, and Sofa

Despite the 2004 and 2009 billion-dollar fraud settlements against the manufacturer of Gabapentin, in 2008 it showed up in the veterinary world - and started being prescribed to dogs.

2008 was over a decade ago, and you’d think that after all the money paid in settlements by the manufacturer, Gabapentin would have disappeared from veterinarian prescription formularies too.

Not so.

Gabapentin is prescribed to dogs for pain management … and in fact, that’s NOT what Gabapentin was released onto the market to treat.

🚨📣 The drug is not FDA-Approved for dogs and has proven ineffective for pain - it’s an anti-epileptic drug.

Dr Josie Beug, DVM says “I haven’t seen a case where Gabapentin really made a difference in pain management. I’ve seen patients become lethargic, develop vomiting and diarrhea, and tremors. These symptoms all went away when we discontinued the drug.”

Reports of side effects are many, including:

💊 Dizziness
💊 Ataxia
💊 Fatigue
💊 Tremors
💊 Myoclonus (involuntary muscle jerking)
💊 Withdrawal syndrome (confusion, agitation, upset stomach, delirium)

It also induced pancreatic cancer in rats through an unknown mechanism …

🧐 So why exactly is the veterinary community prescribing a drug that:

🚫 Was part of the largest pharmaceutical fraud settlements in history
🚫 Has no FDA approval for the conditions it’s used to treat
🚫 Has not been shown to be effective in any double-blind placebo-controlled trials
🚫 May actually prevent the nervous system from repairing itself

The answer is simple. Follow the money.

Yes, it’s scary … but it’s not all doom and gloom. If you have or know a dog that’s being treated with Gabapentin, there’s hope.

Say hello to Bitsy. Bitsy is a 10 year old mixed breed(?) looking for a new home. She is fixed, up to date on shots and housetrained. She is healthy and loves to play with her toys and hang with her human. Bitsy gets along with other dogs, cats and dog smart kids, who understand and respect a senior dog's boundaries.
