At Stratford Animal Care & Control, every cat who comes through our doors receives a Stretch & Scratch cage scratcher. These scratchers are far more than just cardboard — they are an important part of helping shelter cats feel safe, comforted, and less stressed during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
Cats have a natural need to scratch. It helps relieve stress, reduce boredom, provide exercise, and allows them to express normal feline behaviors in a healthy way. In a shelter environment, enrichment is critical for both emotional and physical wellbeing.
What makes these scratchers especially wonderful is that they are specifically designed for shelter cat cages. They securely attach to the cage door, which means they do not take up valuable living space inside the kennel. This allows cats to still have room for food, water, litterboxes, bedding, and movement while benefiting from enrichment and comfort.
Even more special, each scratcher goes home with the cat when adopted. By bringing a familiar item into their new home, it helps provide comfort, continuity, and decompression during the transition out of the shelter environment.
