🌧️☀️ Why We Keep Bunnies Indoors — Especially in Richmond, VA 🐰🏡

Rabbits are not outdoor pets. While it might seem natural to house them outside, the reality is that domestic rabbits are not equipped to survive the elements or dangers that come with outdoor life—especially here in Richmond.

Here’s why we keep our bunnies indoors:

🔹 Extreme Temperatures: Our summers are brutally hot and humid, and winters can be freezing. Rabbits can suffer heatstroke at just 80°F—and Richmond often climbs well above that.
🔹 Predators: Hawks, foxes, raccoons, snakes, and even neighborhood dogs pose a serious threat—even through cages. A rabbit can die from fright alone.
🔹 Parasites & Disease: Outdoor rabbits are at risk for fleas, mites, flystrike, and RHDV2—a deadly rabbit virus now present in the U.S.
🔹 Social Animals: Rabbits thrive on companionship and human interaction. When indoors, they become part of the family. You’ll notice their playful personalities and bond with them deeply.
🔹 Safety & Longevity: Indoor rabbits live longer, healthier lives. Period.

We believe bunnies deserve the same safety and comfort as any other house pet. They’re intelligent, affectionate, and clean—and they belong inside with the people who love them.

Let’s Talk About Feral & Stray Rabbits in the USA – ABANDONING RABBITS 😢2of2

- A domestic rabbit let loose in an established feral colony can be killed in a fight for territory. A female rabbit, who hasn’t been spayed, can produce a litter of babies every 30 days and add to the problem. A park full of rabbits is not an idyllic place for a former pet.
- A house rabbit can live 10+ years in a protected environment. The average wild cottontail lives only 6 months.
- Putting an unwanted rabbit to sleep is kinder than abandoning him in the streets or outdoors. The rabbit will be terrified at being left alone outside in the wild with no caretakers and no friends. It is similar having a city person purposely abandoned on a deserted island with no prepared food, water, or survival skills and animals willing to hunt and kill you for food. A painless death is kinder than a prolonged death from starvation, disease, or attack. The rabbit will never find a friend in the wild and cannot mate with local cottontails because they are a completely different species.

🐇 Feeling Heavy 💔

We’re sitting with some hard feelings today. Adoptions have been slow, and yet our inbox is flooded daily with requests to take in more rabbits — many of them urgent. It’s heartbreaking to have to say no, especially knowing what that “no” might mean.

We want to help every bunny. But rescue work isn’t endless space and bottomless time — it’s real-life limits, emotional tolls, and the constant balancing of who we can help and how much we can give.

We get many requests each year to take in bunnies due to allergies in the home. While we can’t replace medical advice, we want to share that several of us at Hoppy Homes are also allergic to rabbits and still care for them successfully. 🐰

This post is meant to supplement your conversation with a doctor—not replace it—but we hope these tips help you find ways to manage mild symptoms while keeping your bunny family together. 💜

🚫 We cannot take in your rabbit today.
We often get urgent messages like:
“Can you pick up my rabbit today? I’m moving and can’t take them with me.”

🐇 The truth is, we’re full—because adoptions are slow. We primarily work with shelters and other rescues to help rabbits already at risk of euthanasia. When space isn’t opening up through adoptions, we cannot take in more.

📆 Please plan ahead.
Rehoming a pet takes time. Moving day is not the time to start looking for options.

❗And please—never release a rabbit outdoors. Domestic rabbits cannot survive in the wild.

We know life happens. But your rabbit is counting on you to make a safe, responsible plan.
