Thor, a big, lovable Golden Retriever, came into training with one goal: learning to walk nicely on a loose leash. 🦮✨

But along the way, his journey taught his people something just as important.

What will you learn with Four Legged Scholars? 🐶

As an example, our Elementary Obedience Course is broken into 5 weeks and each week, we meet for one hour.

For the first class, dogs stay home. 🐕

This gives us a chance to focus on the human end of dog training, because successful training starts with the person on the other end of the leash — YOU!

You’ll learn how dogs learn, practice basic training skills, and talk about how our timing, body language, voice, and expectations can make a big difference.

You’ll leave with simple tools and techniques you can use at home, so that when you bring your dog to class, you’ll feel more confident and prepared. ✨

My goal is for dog training to be fun, calm, and rewarding for both you and your dog.

By taking a little time to “train the trainer” first, we can create a calmer class and set both ends of the leash up for success.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 "𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲!" 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵, "𝗡𝗮𝗵, 𝗜'𝗺 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱."? 😂🐶

Here are 7 training tips to help your pup stop treating recall like it's optional.

🐾 1. 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙖 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙘𝙪𝙚.
If you've said "come" over and over without much success, teach a new word like "here." Your dog doesn't know the definition, but they learn by association.

🥜 2. 𝙐𝙨𝙚 𝙖 𝙝𝙞𝙜𝙝-𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙧𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙.
Save a special treat just for recall. We've been working with a Beagle named Max, and every time he hears "here," he gets peanut butter. He loves it!

⏱️ 3. 𝙍𝙚𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧 20–30 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙨.
It's not about how many treats you give. It's about how long the reward lasts.

A great recall deserves a great payoff, but a sloppy reward often leads to a sloppy recall....

🎯 4. 𝙎𝙖𝙮 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙘𝙪𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙡𝙮 𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚.
Repeating the command teaches your dog they don't have to respond the first time.

🌳 5. 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙞𝙚𝙧 𝙚𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩.
If your dog doesn't come, the distraction level is probably too high. Build success in quiet places before adding more challenging environments.

🎉 6. 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙛𝙪𝙣.
Encourage your dog by:
• Running away from him
• Kneeling down
• Clapping your hands
• Using an excited, happy voice

Dogs are much more likely to come to someone who looks fun vs. frustrated.

😍 7. 𝙈𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙧𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙖 𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙚𝙭𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚.
Treats, praise, play — whatever your dog loves! The goal is for your dog to think, "Coming to my person is always worth it!"

🐶 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗮, 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻-𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Cocoa was struggling with “Come” and it was honestly frustrating to her dog parent.🤣

So we spent some time getting Cocoa to learn to listen and to Come more reliably.

When teaching Come, the biggest tools we use are:

➡️1.) Use a prompt to get your dog to “Come.” This could be the word “Come, or a “kissing” noise, a happy exciting voice, or a lure. The lure seems to work well for many dogs.

We definitely used this with Cocoa as we practiced.

To start, one person had a treat in her hand, placed it near Cocoa’s muzzle, and walked away calling her. She happily followed. We built from that and extended the range and…

𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙧𝙩 𝙫𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙤 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙬 and see how well Cocoa learned by playing a Come game!

➡️2.) Fade out the prompt as your dog comes better. Once Cocoa started to come well, we stopped using the lure and just called her.

➡️3.) Reward your dog every time for coming.

➡️4.) Do not do anything negative when your dog comes.

➡️5.) Grab your dog’s collar after she comes so she doesn’t learn to run off.

➡️6.) If she is distracted, go back to prompting her and lessen those distractions.

Over time, as you practice these steps, your dog will come more reliably. ❤️

Remember to be consistent and persistent with your dog training!

🚨 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻.

So many dog owners spend their energy correcting what they don't want, while missing the chance to reinforce 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩.

The thing is... rewarded behaviors get repeated.

Your dog doesn't just learn from corrections.

They learn from what earns your attention, and gets them a reward.

Your dog is smart and he/she pays attention to what pays off.

Rewards can be:
🐾 Praise
🦴 Treats
👀 Eye contact and a happy voice
🎾 Playtime
🦴 A favorite chew
❤️ Petting

A clicker is a great way to mark the exact behavior you want. You can also use a unique word or sound, as long as you're consistent.

✔️ Click (or mark) the behavior the instant it happens.
✔️ Deliver the treat within 2–3 seconds.
✔️ Only click when you're going to reward.

Once your dog is performing the behavior successfully about 70–80% of the time, you can phase out the clicker and switch to rewarding randomly.

That unpredictability helps keep the behavior strong. 😍

Because good work deserves rewards...
