Here’s the reality of a good breeder that nobody wants to talk about, as I write this from the parking lot of my vets office. Our first litter with Ahsoka was a DREAM, fat beautiful, healthy puppies and everyone made it into great homes that I’ve been able to watch flourish. Fast forward to this breeding, I paired her to my boy Hinge. My first show dog, a heart dog no doubt and I was so excited that I got to be the whelp to this litter. This litter that would’ve been spectacular. Beauty, brains, strong and healthy pets for the majority but for me so much more. A piece of my heart. This litter has not been a cake walk by any means, I have been awake for over 24 hours now and we have lost 3, almost 4 out of the 9 puppies. I’ve questioned my capabilities, I’ve questioned the fact of “will I ever whelp another litter after this?”, and about a million other questions running through my mind. I have cried to my husband, mentors, friends and my veterinarian as we all put our brains together to save these babes. I am hopeful we have a good plan moving forward, that is all I can be right now is hopeful. Ahsoka has been an amazing mother doing everything on her part but sometimes nature is a beast you just don’t win against even when you’ve stacked odds in your favor. I will step off my soap box now as I know I should be thankful to have 6 puppies alive that are now baking in the incubator and on the right path but someday’s you just have to wonder why and cry a little. This litter has and I’m sure will continue to teach me so much as we continue on the journey. As for us, we all just need a little sleep and a lot of positive thoughts and prayers sent our way! The work of an ethical breeder is gruesome sometimes but there is no better love than that of a Poodle. 🤍
