How do ducks stay dry with all this rain and mud? 🦆

Did you know ducks have waterproof feathers? 💦 They spread a special oil called preen oil over their feathers, so even when they splash around, they don’t get wet. It’s like wearing their very own raincoat all the time! 🧥✨

Next time you see our ducks waddling or swimming, remember—they’re always dry underneath! 💛

🍂 Happy Fall Equinox! Today, day and night are equal—a special balance in nature. While we don’t get too many colorful leaves or chilly air here in Miami, fall still brings change!

On our farm, we’re prepping garden beds, planting cool-season veggies 🌱, and watching pollinators stay busy in the sunshine. Fall in South Florida is a season of renewed growth, a breath of fresh air, and time to come out and play! 🌻

The Royal Poinciana is a tropical tree known for its bright red-orange flowers that bloom in the summer. 🌳 Its wide, spreading branches provide lots of shade, and its seeds grow in long, flat pods. Birds and insects often visit the flowers, helping the tree spread and grow. 🦜

Who says learning can’t be messy? Jumping in puddles isn’t just fun — it’s a sensory-rich experience that supports:

✨ Gross motor development
👃 Sensory exploration (splash, squish, and even the smell of fresh mud!)
🧠 Scientific thinking – What makes puddles? How does water interact with soil?
💬 Language development – “Squishy”, “splashy”, “cold”, “sticky”… so many new words!
🌱 And of course, a little nature-based learning never hurts!

We believe the best classrooms have no walls… and sometimes, no dry socks either. 😉

🍄‍🟫 Let’s talk about Mushrooms on this rainy day ☔️

Mushrooms are one of nature’s best decomposers — that means they break down things that are old or dead and turn them into food for the earth.

Mushrooms don’t make food from the sun like plants. Instead, they send out tiny threads underground called mycelium. The mycelium breaks down dead plants, wood, and even manure. What’s left behind is rich soil full of nutrients.

✨ Why does this matter on the farm?

Less Waste: Old plants and scraps don’t pile up — mushrooms recycle them. ♻️

Healthier Soil: The nutrients they release make soil strong for the next crop. 🪴

Better Water Holding: Decomposed material + mycelium keep the soil spongy and moist. 💦

Full Circle: Mushrooms close the loop between waste and new life. 🌱

Have you ever met Tom? 🦃 On the farm, you can’t miss him; he is our proud turkey with the bright feathers and curious eyes. Turkeys like him can change the color of their heads when they’re excited, and they have super sharp eyesight—much better than ours in the daylight. 👀 While wild turkeys can fly, Tom prefers strutting proudly, greeting everyone who stops to watch him with his handsome “gobble.”

Meet Mai 🐐🌿 Mai has been part of The Little Farm family for a year and a half, and we can’t imagine the farm without her! 🌸 Meet P the Pig! 🐷 All the way from sunny Hawaii 🏄‍♀️, P has found herself a home here at The Little Farm!

She’s the sweetest soul—kind, curious, and always rooting around for snacks (especially juicy guavas 🍈 right from under the tree!). P loves when kids come to visit and will always find the perfect shady spot in the middle of the day for a cozy nap. 💕
