This is Rayna feeling totally safe with this young boy. For anyone who knows Rayna, you know she is a food ju**ie and will take any opportunity to eat fresh grass! For her to follow him without a lead and not take off for the grass at the edge of the arena, he has his intention set on what he is asking of her and because she feels safe with him she is willing to comply.

So on Wednesday I was going to get Epona and just take her for an in-hand walk around the property. Well, she had other ideas and I ended up spending 40 minutes until I got her haltered. The video is just a short time of my moving her until she decided she was ready to stop. When she finally decided she was tired of moving I haltered her, led her around the pasture, then let her go. Thursday it took me about 15 minutes of moving her, haltered and led her around a bit and took her back to the herd and stood with her until she decided to leave me. Friday it took about 2 minutes, again walked her around. Then unhaltered her and she spent about 10 minutes with me.
Catching a horse that does not want to be caught takes time and patience but they soon decide it's less work to be caught.

Sassy is just hanging out with Sierra after some ground work. She is such a chill mare.

Coltan is finally accepting some human touch and he seems to really enjoy his rump being scratched. Mom isn't too happy about it yet but she'll come around.

Sassy is our newest addition. She is an owner surrender due to not being able to keep weight on. She is a well broke 16-18 year old mare but has some hind issues and arthritis. We will slowly add a mixture of mash feed to the pasture grass, along with vitamin/mineral and arthritis supplements. When she is at an appropriate weight we will start working with her to see just what all she knows. Follow her progress with us.
If you would like to donate towards her feed/supplements our Venmo is or check out our website at justhorsesanctuary.com for more options.

Sierra and I were out fixing fence and picking up sticks/branches from the pasture and several of the horses had to check to see if we had any food and to check out what we did have.

I think they know it’s chow time! 🤭

We have a couple of older ladies who get fed large quantities because they have trouble keeping weight on. (Nope, I don’t know what that’s like either.)
But do you see the one from this pasture among that group lining up at the gate? No. No you don’t. Because Queen Rosie knows she can take her time moseying on in, and we’ll STILL make sure she gets fed first so she has ample time to finish her dish. It’s good to be the Queen!👑

We feed many of our horses personalized recipes of feed, meds, and supplements to help keep them as healthy as possible. If you’d like to contribute to cost of keeping our beloved herd feeling their best, you can donate easily via Venmo; we’re “Justahorse” in Melrose, and every little bit helps. Or check out our website for other ways to help out: https://www.justahorsesanctuary.com/ !❤️

Thanks for supporting our horses and our mission. 🥰

We didn't know horses liked bananas but Athena loves them, peel and all!

What a blast the last 3 days were! The girls at Summer Camp were so much fun. The days were filled with learning and fun. From learning to ride, tack the horses, hoof care, feeding and Equine Assisted Learning to water balloons on and off horse to the Fun Show at the end when the rain finally stopped yesterday. It was certainly a camp to remember!

The Bethany St Joseph Adult Day Care Center clients and staff were out today for Farm Days. They enjoyed a lunch then interaction with the horses(and some cats). Along with petting the horses, some even got to lead Springer. It was a beautiful day to spend some time at the sanctuary. Everyone had a great time hearing stories of some of the clients' horses and learning the back stories of some of ours.

It was a beautiful night for chores. 🌅
Lady and Coltan - our mama and foal- took full advantage of the best fly-shooing spot in front of the fan before sharing a sunset dinner (if Coltan leaves Lady any…at this rate he’s going to grow like a w**d!). 💚
Handsome Tonic was handsoming, as always. 😍
And Willow….well, sometimes you can tell from the first sassy side-eye that Willow’s silly side is about to make an appearance! 🤪
We have a full cast of characters here - equine, feline, canine, and even human. We’d love to have you see for yourselves!
