🐴 Understanding Hindquarter Tightness in Your Horse

In this video clip I am working on loosening the hip, gluteals, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, semimembranosus, and the Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL)!

Our equine athletes use these powerful muscle groups to drive forward, turn, and collection. When they get tight, it directly compromises their movement, performance, and overall comfort.

Why Do Horses Get Sore in These Areas?
• The Gluteals & Hamstrings (Biceps Femoris, Semitendinosus, Semimembranosus): These are the primary "propulsion" muscles. Heavy work, deep footing, explosive jumping, or repetitive lope/canter work can easily strain them. If a horse has a restricted lower back or pelvic misalignment, the hamstrings will compensate by overworking, leading to hard, painful spasms.

• The Tensor Fasciae Latae (TFL): This small, superficial muscle sits on the outside of the hip, flexing the hip and assisting the stifle. The TFL frequently becomes chronically tight, presenting as rigid, "stringy" bands of tissue. This occurs when it is forced to act as a primary stabilizer to compensate for weak gluteal muscles, core instability, or underlying stifle and hock discomfort.

Regular equine bodywork releases these restrictive tension patterns, improves local circulation, and restores an optimal range of motion. Your horse will reward you with a longer stride, easier engagement, and a much happier attitude under saddle!

Watch as I release tension in muscles and fascia along this horse’s rib cage. Muscles include Abdominal Obliques, Latissimus Dorsi, Deep pectorals, Thoracic Serratis Ventralis and intercostals.
Here are some reasons she maybe sore in these areas.
• Hindlimb Lameness: Tight obliques are frequently seen when a horse tries to stabilize its pelvis due to unilateral hock or stifle arthritis.
• Front-Limb Lameness: Since horses lack a collarbone, the serratus ventralis acts as a massive muscular shock absorber suspending the rib cage between the front legs. Pain in the hooves (e.g., navicular disease, laminitis) or fetlocks forces this muscle to stay contracted to cushion the impact of each stride.
• Hind-End Compensation: The latissimus dorsi connects the spine and ribs to the front arm bone, but it works in tandem with the pelvis during locomotion. Weakness or pain in the hocks or stifles forces the horse to pull itself forward using the back and shoulders, overloading this muscle.

These are just a few possible reasons this horse is showing soreness in the muscles I was working on.

I am starting another course! I decided to add Holistic Equine Nutrition to my business modalities. This will help me dive deeper into understanding the different reasons for pain a horse experiences. Ulcers and digestive issues are very common and show up as lower back pain, weak core, sore girth area and more. My clients always as me what they can give their horses to help that is a more holistic approach. This modality won’t be offered till my training is complete.
One is never done learning new things and new ways to think. I love expanding my knowledge!

What a fantastic week it's been, enhancing the well-being of horses through massage, Red Light, KT Taping techniques, Reiki and Communication! I also had the privilege of working from my office, conducting remote Animal Communication and Mediumship sessions. I'm passionate about improving the lives of horses and helping their humans build a stronger bond, from the ground to the saddle!
