Just a quick reminder that county fair season is just around the corner! We're pleased to announce that we will be offering two drive-through health certificate days at our clinic, conveniently located just off Route 71 east of Ottawa.

We've scheduled these dates specifically because an Illinois exhibition health certificate is valid for 90 days. Therefore, a certificate issued on either of these days will cover all of the Illinois county fairs.

To schedule your appointment, please give us a call/text at (815) 240-5600 or send us an email at [email protected].

We look forward to seeing you!

📣 Exciting News from SillGrass Vets! 🐴

We still have recipient mares available for lease! This is a great opportunity for those looking to breed their mares without interrupting their riding schedule.

✨ Dr. Hoyt is available to perform embryo flushes from your donor mare, allowing one of our healthy recipient mares to carry the foal — so your donor mare can stay in training or continue doing what she loves!

Interested in learning more? Contact us today to discuss your options and secure your recipient mare.

Is it bad Doc?!

This little ewe was presented for an unusual swelling that appeared on her lower left side shortly after lambing. Top differentials for this presentation are:

🦠 abscess
🩸 seroma
🩹hernia

After draining serosanginous (bloody) fluid to relieve the pressure, we were able to determine that the ewe was also suffering from a hernia which likely happened during parturition (lambing). The abdominal wall is stretched and weakened during pregnancy and sometimes birthing can be quite traumatic. The abdominal wall or body wall was compromised and now her intestines can slide through the hole in the body wall and are just under the skin.

… so is it bad? Yes, if the intestines get strangulated in the hole, the animal could die. She will also be a poor choice to breed back as she will likely suffer complications from subsequent pregnancies.

Today we hosted farrier Travis Finn for some cases that needed corrective trimming and shoeing. Conditions treated include:
▪️incorrect hoof pastern angles in a young QH that was causing locking stifles
▪️medial/lateral imbalances that were exacerbating arthritis/ringbone
▪️laminitis
All horses had immediate improvement and some complicated lameness cases now have a clear path forward. The biomechanics of the foot affect the biomechanics of the rest of the limb and body. Having x-ray readily available allows for the most accurate adjustments. Travis Finn will be returning in 5 weeks and we have room on the schedule for a few more horses. If you are interested in some advanced podiatry for your horse, give us a call for more info. Thank you Travis!

Lambing and kidding season is upon us! StillGrass Veterinarians has prepared a comprehensive kit to support you during this busy time. Our kit includes supplies for both delivery and neonatal care, along with written resources on what to expect, normal parameters, and suggested feeding schedules for your newborns. Additionally, we have high-quality frozen cow colostrum on hand for newborns who may need supplemental nutrition.

As always, we're available to our current clients for emergency care, including assistance with dystocias and c-sections. Please remember that emergency care is most effective when dystocias can be treated at our clinic, so we encourage you to create an emergency transport plan now.

Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to order a kit.

Breeding season is well underway and today we were collecting oocytes to make ICSI embryos. ICSI is a relatively complicated process, but hopefully this can shed some light on the first steps. Don't hesitate to contact us if you'd like to discuss if ICSI embryo production is a good choice for your breeding goals.

As we head into the new season, it's a great time to review your equine emergency plans and ensure your emergency kits are fully stocked with unexpired medications.

We offer emergency kits to our current clients (seen within the last 12 months and with a $0 balance). These kits contain common medications, basic medical instruments for performing physical exams and treating minor wounds, and clear instructions on their use and how to assess your horse's condition before contacting a veterinarian. To order your kit, please contact us via FB messenger, email at [email protected], or text/call at (815)240-5600.

While our ambulatory services are available for emergencies within 30 miles of our clinic, we strongly recommend that you have a transportation plan in place. Many emergencies are best treated at our clinic, where we can provide a safe, clean environment and comprehensive care, including continued nursing for critical cases.

“Is it bad, doc!?”

A series of graphic and goofy injuries with positive outcomes. 🙈😳🐴🧰

This gelding ran himself into a tree and has been hiding a large stick under his forelock. He was a good boy for foreign body removal and will make a full recovery. Thank you to the owners for bringing him to us and for letting us share this case! Freckles, your owners already think you are a unicorn, you really didn’t have to prove it to us 🤣
