Highland Lakes Canine Rescue The Highland Lakes Canine Rescue operates in the Texas Hill Country outside of Austin, TX. HLCR is a private 501(c)3 no-kill rescue serving Central Texas.

We're a no-kill dog rescue in the Texas Hill Country dedicated to saving the most vulnerable dogs: those abandoned, neglected, or medically critical in shelters across Central Texas. Our mission is simple: rescue, rehabilitate, and find them loving forever homes. On our 15-acre sanctuary, a passionate team of staff and volunteers provides comprehensive medical care, proper nutrition, exercise, socialization, and training. But most importantly, we give each dog what they've been missing: attention, compassion, and unconditional love. We're proudly powered by donations alone and deeply grateful for every contribution that helps us continue this work. As neighbors and partners in our community, we're committed to making a difference, one dog at a time. Follow our rescue journeys on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, and be sure to like our page for updates, success stories, and ways to get involved. Happy Adoption Day, Zero! 🖤 When overcrowding at the Humane Society of New Braunfels sent him our way last year, he was a black Lab mix named Pothos with a clean bill of health, very firm opinions about personal space, and one question for every human he met: can I trust you? People were iffy at most, and preferable from a respectful distance while he gathered evidence. Then, one kind gesture at a time, that distance shrank. Zero learned that human attention was worth the risk, that playing with his dog friends beat watching from the sidelines, and that trust comes easier when someone goes first. His best friend was Henry, a fellow shy boy, and the two understood each other perfectly.

Along the way, Zero became our unofficial head of new dog orientation, showing nervous newcomers like Henry that the humans here are usually nice and occasionally carry treats. His foster earned his trust the honest way and then did the only reasonable thing: kept him. Zero is still with that lucky person today, proof that a foster fail is really a success with excellent timing, and that the hearts worth winning sometimes take their time. We wish them both a lifetime of love and happiness together. 🐾❤️

If Zero’s story has you wondering who might be waiting for you, come meet our dogs at www.hlcr.org/adoptable-dogs. Your happily furever after could start with just one hello…

Meet Luna, a ten year old Husky and Redbone Coonhound mix who beat cancer and apparently took it as a sign to start climbing things. She is a senior on paper and a mountaineer in practice. Fences, furniture, the highest perch in the room: if it goes up, Luna’s into it. She is also a gifted door opener, which is a polite way of saying she needs a covered kennel or a secure room of her own whenever nobody is home to supervise.

Away from her climbing career, Luna is a well mannered companion. She weighs 50 pounds, is house trained and crate trained, walks nicely in a harness, and rides calmly in the car. She gets along with cats, most dogs, kids, and adults, though she can be a bit bossy with other dogs, so an experienced owner who enjoys a clever, confident senior will suit her best. Luna is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, heartworm negative, and ready to bring her spirit to a home in need of some whimsy.

Highland Lakes Canine Rescue is located outside Marble Falls, Texas about an hour west of Austin. You can find Luna’s adoption profile at www.hlcr.org/adoptable-dogs/luna or call/text 830-693-0569 for more info. One tap from you means one less night in a kennel for her, so please share this post! 🐾❤️

🌟 Fun fact! Luna was born on March 16th which is also Everything You Do Is Right Day; an uplifting observance that celebrates owning our decisions, letting go of fears, and walking in confidence. Pretty fitting for this awesome senior pup!

We asked for $1,600 for TJ. You gave $1,833! 🙌

We’re grateful, but not surprised. Our people show up for the pups every single time. That generosity keeps us doing what we do: rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming the dogs who need us most.

Thank you to everyone who gave, watched the Facebook Live, and shared TJ’s campaign, and to our two match donors who went first. We covered TJ’s care from our medical fund, and your gifts refilled it, so we’re ready for the next dog who needs us. The extra $233 is going straight to TJ’s heartworm treatment.

And the best news: one of TJ’s donors liked him so much, she decided a donation wasn’t enough. TJ is heading home with her as a foster-to-adopt, a trial run to make sure he and her dog make a good team. Will they be best friends or better as pen pals? Stay tuned. We’ll let you know how the introductions go…

TJ won’t be the last dog who needs a little extra help to heal. We’re planning more live events, and you won’t want to miss the next guest!

A Very Happy Adoption Day to Flynn the Brave! 🐾🥹

This throwback PomChi mix came to us as one of 49 dogs rescued from a hoarding situation in Llano, and shelter life was a lot for one small dog to carry. For the curious, a throwback takes after the Pomeranian’s older, larger ancestors, with a longer muzzle, a sturdier frame, and a face that is a little more fox than teddy bear. Flynn was skittish, slow to trust, and visibly worn down by shelter stress. Still, a few patient people found a quiet approach that helped calm him, and one of them decided that Flynn’s bravery deserved a chance to grow. So they took him home where he met the resident pets and settled into the new digs in short order.

The first photo was on his intake day last November. The couch photos are from his first week in foster. And the last is Flynn just a few days ago happily playing outside. His daily home schedule is full: acrobatics, playtime with his siblings, and laps at such speed that his family affectionately calls him Flynn McMissile. When the races end, he retires to the back of the couch with his favorite squeaker. Now the dog who once kept his distance from the world is finding out it’s actually a pretty sweet place to be, and perhaps that people aren’t so bad after all.

Not every shy dog can show you who they really are from inside a kennel, and sometimes the best ones just need a chance to process their big feelings in a safe, patient place so they can learn to shine. Take a look at our adoptable rescues at www.hlcr.org/adoptable-dogs. ❤️

“Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” -Theodore Roosevelt, Labor Day address, 1903.

Last week, an incredible group of Burnet High School students came out to the shelter ready to work. They scrubbed water troughs, brought order to cabinets and shelves, and gave our doghouses a fresh coat of paint. Between chores, the students learned about HLCR’s history, our mission, and what advocating for animal welfare looks like in real time. They also spent valuable time giving (and receiving) attention from our dogs!

Today, we want to extend a great big thank you to them. The doghouses look brand new, the cabinets finally make sense, and several dogs have added new names to their list of favorite people. Perhaps best of all, these young people demonstrated what can be accomplished by those who show up with a determined heart to do the right thing.

682 days and counting. Why? Your guess is as good as ours…

Delgato is a three-year-old German Shepherd who came to us from New Braunfels heartworm positive and finished treatment fully healthy. He’s calm, easy to walk, knows his basic commands, and loves kids and most other animals. Basically, if they’re cool, he’s cool. Puppies and small dogs are his favorites, which is how he earned the title of Uncle Del. He’s a gentle guy who loves a good game of keep away, as you can see in this video. He also loves water and will happily jump in the pool or lake with you!

Del rarely barks at people or his furry friends, but he’s not a super fan of pushy or loud dogs, so he’d do best in a calm home where any canine siblings are polite and easygoing. He’s the total package: playful, loving, smart, athletic but not hyper, and really just an all-around fantastic companion.

Delgato is neutered, microchipped, current on preventatives, and ready to go home today. After so long in the shelter, he’s ready to find his forever home with a battle buddy that just gets it.

Highland Lakes Canine Rescue is located outside of Marble Falls, Texas about an hour west of Austin. Learn more and apply to adopt Delgato at www.hlcr.org/adoptable-dogs/delgato or by calling/texting 830-693-0569.

As much as we love Del, we really want him to high-tail it out of here already. Please share this post so this very good boy can finally find his person!
