🐾 Giving Tuesday Spotlight: Scooby’s Second Chance 🐾

Meet Scooby — a dog whose strength and spirit inspired everyone who met him.
On a cold, wintery day, Manhattan Animal Control received a call from a kind Samaritan: there was a dog lying by the side of the highway, so emaciated he looked like a trash bag. When Animal Control arrived, they were shocked — the dog lifted his head! Cars had been passing for who knows how long, and yet Scooby was still alive. Originally thought to be a boxer mix, he was actually a Great Dane, with every rib, spine, and hip bone visible.

Scooby was brought to our Manhattan shelter, where he began a special feeding plan to gain weight slowly and safely. In just two weeks, he started to flourish.

Thanks to the care of our team and the partnership with Animal Control, Scooby not only gained weight — he gained a second chance at life. Soon after, he found a loving home where he would never be mistaken for trash again.

Stories like Scooby’s remind us why we do what we do — sometimes all a dog needs is warmth, care, and a chance to show their true spirit.

🐾 Giving Tuesday Spotlight: Diesel’s Dream Life 🐾

Here’s another inspiring story from Prairie Paws. Diesel was found wandering Ottawa as a stray and was taken by a kind Samaritan to a local vet clinic for care. The clinic quickly realized Diesel was an amazing dog, but he was in rough shape. After days of trying to find his owner with no luck, Diesel was transferred to Prairie Paws, hoping we could help him find a loving home.

At over 80 lbs and with a lot of hair, finding the right home for a gentle giant like Diesel can be challenging—especially with no background or history to guide us. He was adopted twice within two months, but both times was returned. Through these experiences, we learned Diesel loves meeting other dogs but prefers to have a home to himself, and he can be a little destructive if left alone outside.

Then something amazing happened! The local bike shop, Ottawa Bike and Trail, felt Diesel might be the perfect fit for their team. They had recently mourned the loss of Deeks, another gentle giant and Prairie Paws alumni, and Diesel was ready to step into Deeks’ old life—a dream life for a dog! At the shop, Diesel would rarely be left alone, meet plenty of dogs during visits, have the house mostly to himself, and receive all the love and belly rubs he could ever want.

Diesel spent his first day at the bike shop, and it was a perfect fit. Now, he’s the spoiled celebrity he always wanted to be! If you see him at the store or around town, you’ll notice he’s gained weight, is well-groomed, and is deeply loved.

Sometimes dogs need more than a second chance—they need the right chance. Diesel’s story is proof that with care, patience, and a little hope, every dog can find their forever dream home.

🐾 Giving Tuesday Spotlight: Cromwell’s Fresh Start 🐾

Here’s another inspiring story from Prairie Paws. Cromwell came to us as a stray, picked up by ACO Brodosi. He was a little old man, matted, soaking wet, and in rough shape. Once our team got him cleaned up, we discovered he was missing an eye—and had a few lumps. Thanks to our amazing vets, we confirmed the lumps were benign, and with proper care, Cromwell was ready for a new beginning.

Now, Cromwell is thriving in a loving home, proving that it’s never too late for a second chance.

Here’s another inspiring story from Prairie Paws. Willie was found outside with a severe eye injury, struggling to survive on his own. Thanks to the quick action of ACO Donnelly and our dedicated team, Willie received the surgery he desperately needed. After having his injured eye removed, he spent a month recovering with love, care, and patience from our staff.

Today, Willie is healthy and happy—a true testament to the power of second chances.

🐾 Happy Giving Tuesday, Prairie Paws Family! 🐾

Today is a national day of giving—a day when people across the country come together to uplift the causes closest to their hearts. At Prairie Paws, that means fighting for every animal who needs safety, healing, and a second chance.
Thanks to your support, 2025 has been a year full of incredible adoptions, reunifications, and lifesaving medical care. Stay tuned—our Facebook feed will be filled all day with heartwarming stories of pets whose lives were transformed because of YOU.

And we’re kicking off the day with Goomba.
Goomba arrived at our shelter with zero body fat, every rib showing, and battling heartworms—his little body exhausted, but his spirit unbelievably strong. With consistent meals, dedicated care, and the patience of our staff, he began to slowly gain weight. Weeks later, he was finally strong enough to begin the treatments he needed to survive.

Through it all, Goomba never stopped wagging his tail. He greeted everyone with joy, choosing love even when life hadn’t been kind to him.

Today, Goomba is heartworm-free, healthy, and living his best life with a family who absolutely adores him. A dog who once fought for survival is now sleeping in a warm bed, playing in a yard, and finally knowing what it feels like to be safe.
