it” I read that somewhere, when I was out with the dogs today it popped in my head again. Our dogs don’t get that many choices in their lives. They get told when and where to go to the bathroom, when and what to eat, who to be friends with, what toys to play with etc. I’m not saying we don’t love our dogs, we do. I’m just saying that the nature of our relationship is naturally unbalanced.

We have to actively work to balance out the scale a little more. Things like going on a sniffy walk, having multiple resting options, respecting your dogs social preferences, can all help add some choice into their lives.

And why’s choice important? Well, dogs are happier with more agency, I think all beings are. Your relationship with your dog will thrive, you’ll get to see who your dog really is.

Try offering more choice on your next walk. Let your dog choose where to go. At crossroads, pause, see what direction peaks their interest. They might need some help at first, but look for subtle cues. Like an ear flick, or a glance in one direction. Then, turn that way and go explore.
