They love life here at the cathouse, for we here at A Place for Benny do the best we can to make it a home, but nothing replaces a home where they get to be the center of attention and a cozy couch and bed to sleep in.

I spent the day staying as busy as I could to focus the brain. I worked on the back porch of the cathouse for Azzy and Ollie, our outsiders. Then I put my headphones on, cranked up Motorhead's No Sleep til Hammersmith album, and mowed. A cassette I used to carry in my ruck along with a Walkman and during the hurry up and wait it would be a disappear to a Motorhead show ( I still keep a copy in my truck). With names and faces heavy on my mind today of some of the greatest rejects the Marine Corps had to offer, in my opinion. Not all of them lost thier life on foreign soil, and yet they did. I tried to keep the memories of the laughs and cruel pranks alive today.

Then I come tonight to the cathouse and there is an absolute warrior in Ace. Brought to us starving and a severely broken bottom jaw, it was touch and go. He remained positive, purred and loved through the pain, and came out on the other side like a champ. Wounded but not beaten. A happy boy through it all. He is truly special. I am grateful for him, his zeal for life, and above all to the great I AM for the opportunity to know, to love, and to be his caretaker while he awaits his furever home. The jaw may be crooked, but he is beautiful inside and out.

Days like this I am so grateful to God for this place, and all those out there who support us.

Last night our newest intake left for her new furever home. Congrats Peaches!! We wish you a long, happy, and healthy life full of love. She wasn't at the cathouse very long but she made an impact and we loved her immediately. Her new mom was over the moon with her and promised to make her one spoiled kitty!

The absolute beauty of our flag. Majestic. It means you, it means me, it means everything. During the early wars a man carried the colors into battle, not a weapon, but a flag. They were targeted for it and another would drop his weapon and pick it up when flag bearer fell. In modern wars Marines are taught to take it down and burn it if they are overrun so it does not become a trophy for the enemy. I wish that every American knew the feeling one gets from coming back from a patrol or mission and you see the flag flying from the firebase you know you are almost home, relative safety. Your grip on your weapon loosens, your step lighter, your gear a little less heavy.

This holiday weekend is not for us vets, its for the fallen. Our brothers who did not make it home. Some years its somber, this year in particularly its heavy on my mind. I think about my brothers who didn't come home daily, but this is different for some reason. Maybe Ty is speaking to me, maybe I know with my heart condition I'm getting closer to rejoining my unit. Maybe I am just getting soft. I dunno. But we owe these guys everything, for they gave everything. I try to be the best I can to honor thier sacrifice and wonder if they would even know me now.

Tomorrow as a family we gather at the family cemetery and then have a reunion dinner, this is what those men and women have given us the opportunity to do. We thank them, we honor them. It is my hope that each of you take a moment to thank and honor them too. May God bless them, and may God bless the United States of America...long may that beautiful flag wave.

This little purrbox named Peaches had a big day today. She made her first trip to the vet, got wormed, checked out ( healthy girl), and her first shots. She crashed out for a nap after, and was raring to go by feeding time. She is available for visits and seeking a furever home.
