Meet Boone: A Rare Italian Herding Dog!

This is 6-year-old Boone, pictured here with Dr. Sweeton. He visited for treatment for a torn nail! Boone is a Bergamasco Shepherd, a rare Italian herding breed known for their absolutely unique coat!

What makes Boone's coat so special:
The Bergamasco's distinctive "locks" are made of different types of hair that naturally form together to create a dense, protective layer. This isn't matting - it's how their coat is supposed to look! These locks protect them from harsh weather and predators while herding in the Italian Alps.

About the Bergamasco Shepherd:
*Ancient Italian herding breed
*Rare in the United States
*Independent, intelligent working dogs
*Their unique coat requires special understanding and care
*Originally bred to work in mountainous terrain

Boone came in for a torn nail, which can be quite painful regardless of breed! The Veterinary Urgent Care team provided the care he needed to get him comfortable again. Even rare breed dogs face the same common issues as other pets.

Torn nails are more common than you might think:
*Can happen from catching on surfaces
*Running on rough terrain
*Normal wear if nails get too long
*Usually heal well with proper treatment

🌽 Meet Winnie: When Unintended Walk Snacks Go Wrong! 🌽

Look at this beautiful 4-year-old Golden Retriever who found an unexpected "snack" during her walk! Winnie discovered a corn on the cob and decided it looked delicious - not knowing how dangerous it could be! 😬

Thanks to her owner's FAST ACTION, we were able to induce vomiting and get that corn cob out safely! Look at that happy, relieved smile - Winnie is feeling much better now! ✨

🚨 IMPORTANT: Corn cobs are EXTREMELY dangerous for dogs!
-They don't digest and can cause complete intestinal blockage
-Can require emergency surgery if not removed quickly
-Even small pieces can be life-threatening
-Time is absolutely critical!

Winnie's owner did everything right:
✅ Recognized the danger immediately
✅ Called us right away
✅ Brought her in without delay
✅ Quick action = successful outcome!

Other dangerous "walk finds" to watch for:

💕 Meet Dotty: The Sweetest American Bulldog! 💕

Look at this gorgeous 6-year-old American Bulldog who came in for diarrhea!

Even when she's not feeling her best, Dotty's sweet personality shines through that beautiful smile! 😍

Dotty was such a good girl during her visit! We took X-rays to make sure everything looked okay internally, then got her started on treatment to get her tummy troubles under control. 📸

Diarrhea in dogs can have many causes:
-Dietary indiscretion (eating something they shouldn't!) 🍽️
-Stress or anxiety 😰
-Food allergies or sensitivities
-Infections or parasites 🦠
-Changes in diet or routine

When to bring your dog in for diarrhea:
✔️Lasting more than 24 hours
✔️Blood in the stool
✔️Vomiting along with diarrhea
✔️Signs of dehydration
✔️Lethargy or loss of appetite

The X-rays help us rule out serious issues like blockages or other internal problems. Combined with proper treatment, most dogs with diarrhea feel better quickly! ✨

The Woodward Dream Cruise 🚘 was a total Veterinary Urgent Care - Madison Heights, Michigan success!

🚙 250 dogs & their families received VUC Collapsible Water Bowls & water bottles this weekend during the extreme summer heat☀️ 🐕
🚙 We built awareness in the community sharing that we are here for 🐶 & 🐱 in need
🚙 We met and connected with fellow veterinary 🩺 professionals in the community
🚙 VUC received a shoutout on 📻 WOMC Detroit - broadcasting live from the Woodward Dream Cruise

VUC had a blast cruising Woodward and thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hi. We look forward to next year!
