A German Shepherd who spent years working alongside sheriff's deputies in Florida became an unexpected internet favorite after posing for his official identification photo in a police uniform. K9 Chico, a member of the Orange County Sheriff's Office, wore his handler's uniform complete with a tie, badge, and service ribbons for a portrait that quickly attracted thousands of admirers.
The photograph was originally shared by the sheriff's office on October 22, 2020, during a department picture day.
While most officers posed for their photographs in standard uniforms, Chico received a special outfit of his own. The German Shepherd appeared in a formal law enforcement uniform, with his ears standing upright and his face looking directly toward the camera.
But Chico was much more than a photogenic dog wearing police clothing.
At the time, he was approximately five and a half years old and had already spent about four and a half years serving with the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
According to department representatives, Chico worked as both a patrol dog and a narcotics detection K9. His handler, Corporal Robert Lees, had worked alongside him throughout those years of service.
When he wasn't on duty, Chico lived at home with his handler and family. The department also shared that he enjoyed playing tug-of-war and spending time with his Kong toys.
After the official portrait was posted online, the response quickly grew beyond the local community.
Reports published in October 2020 noted that the photograph had been shared more than 10,000 times. People were drawn to the unusual sight of a working police dog wearing the same formal uniform as his human colleagues.
The sheriff's office welcomed the attention, noting that Chico was a valued member of its team and that the photograph had brought smiles to people across the country.
Although the portrait became popular for its appearance, it also highlighted the role trained K9 dogs play in law enforcement.
Chico had already dedicated years to working beside deputies when the photograph was taken.
The picture remains a memorable example of a police department celebrating one of its four-legged team members, not for a dramatic rescue or an extraordinary arrest, but with a simple official portrait recognizing his place on the team.
