Most People Misunderstand Dog Barking

When dogs bark at other dogs, most people think:

“That dog is aggressive.”

But most of the time, that’s not true.

Barking is a dog’s way of communicating how they feel.

Very often barking means:

• “I’m uncomfortable.”
• “That dog is too close.”
• “I feel overwhelmed.”
• “I need space.”

Dogs don’t have words like we do, so they use body language and vocalization to communicate.

Barking is often a warning signal, not a sign of a bad dog.

It’s actually a dog trying to avoid conflict before things escalate.

When we understand what dogs are saying, we can help them feel safer, calmer, and more confident around other dogs.
