A couple of weeks ago, Dr. Mike Etter and Dr. KC Brooks cooked and donated a pie for the auction at the Lodi fair. This was their way of giving back to the community they have served for over 35 years. This month, both our beloved and longtime veterinarians have retired. Their impact on our 4-H community and area in general is invaluable, and they will be greatly missed. Join us in thanking them for their dedication to our community.

The weather is finally starting to feel like summer ☀️ and it sounds like it's going to be a pretty hot weekend!!

🌡Here are some tips and reminders for keeping your pets cool on the hot days:

🚗🔥Please do not leave your pets in parked vehicles. On an 80° day, a car in direct sunlight can jump to over 100 degrees in less than 10 minutes. Even shaded cars with windows cracked can heat up quickly.
❄️Keep your pets inside in the air-conditioning as much as possible. Take your daily walks either early or late in the day when temperatures are not so high.
💧Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water to drink. Animals pant and sweat through their paw pads to cool off so keep them hydrated.
🐾🔥 Avoid concrete and asphalt on the hotter days. Paws can burn in less than 1 minute so use the 7 second rule with your hand, walk in grassy areas, or buy protective booties.
🔸️Certain dogs may be more prone to overheating, such as brachycephalic breeds, elderly, long-haired or overweight dogs. Take breaks as needed.
🌊⛱️ If your dog enjoys being in the water, invest in a kiddy pool for them to cool off in. (P.S. Our daycare dogs love their pools!)

Enjoy the beautiful Wisconsin summer weather! 😎

⚠️Be on the lookout for these signs of heat stress:
-Unexpectedly anxious or weak
-Less responsive than usual to commands
-Heavy or frequent panting
-Excessive drooling
-Discolored, dry, and/or sticky gums
🥵Heat stress can quickly progress (with or without other signs like staggering, vomiting, or diarrhea) to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and even death without immediate veterinary care.
-Lack of coordination
-Dizziness/confusion
-Rapid heart rate
-Collapse/convulsions
-Vomiting/diarrhea
-Gums are blue or bright red
-Loss of consciousness
⚠️If you ever notice these signs after your dog has been outside on a hot day, move them to a cooler area immediately and call the clinic right away.
