💙✨ February is Heart Health Month! ✨💙

This month, we’re raising awareness about cardiac health in exotic companion mammals! Just like cats and dogs, rabbits, ferrets, and even guinea pigs can also suffer from serious cardiovascular conditions.

Common signs of heart disease in exotic mammals:
❤️ Lethargy or weakness
💨 Increased respiratory effort or rate
🍽️ Decreased appetite or weight loss
🩺 Abnormal heart sounds or murmurs detected during veterinary exams

Early detection is key to managing heart disease! Routine veterinary check-ups, imaging (such as radiographs and echocardiograms), and proper diet and exercise can help keep our exotic patients’ hearts healthy.

Throughout February, we’ll be sharing veterinary insights on diagnosing and managing cardiac disease in small exotic mammals. Stay tuned! 🐰🐹🦔🐾

It’s the little things…

Half the staff is out sick, the little staff we have here is doing their best to make sure the clinic runs smoothly, which means no time for breaks! We were pleasantly surprised when this lunch delivery came from the first client of the day, and now we have happy and well fed techs!

Never expected, but always appreciated. Thanks Mikayla! 💜💜💜

RACHEL
-Years at Ness Exotic: 3 years
-Pets: Chinese Water Dragon, Northern Blue Tongue Skink, a Leopard gecko she’s fostering, a rabbit, 3 dogs, 2 clutches of baby jumping spiders and 2 adults. Let us know if you want to purchase any jumping spiders as they will soon be looking for new homes! 🕸️
-One thing she loves about being an exotic animal tech: Helping pets that can’t be seen at traditional exotic animal clinics and teaching/educating clients about exotic species
-A little more about Rachel: You might see Rachel at the front desk for a while as she is recovering from multiple surgeries, but she still jumps in and helps tech as needed. We hope she will be able to join us in the back full time again soon! Rachel loves to bake and bring in treats for us and she likes to sew and often sews snuggies and cozies for exotic pets! Another fun fact is she was born with 6 fingers on each hand! The extra appendages were removed when she was very little, but we wonder if those extra fingers might have come in handy in our busy practice! 😜

-A little more about Michelle: Was diagnosed with MS a few years ago and likes to support research for this cause, rides a motorcycle with her husband and they are members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA). 🏍️ She loves to spend her free time at the VA.
