This house faced an unusual challenge: how do you avoid making it feel oversized when only the owners are there? Jeff Jordan Architects answered stretching the plan back from the lake, broke it into smaller volumes, and placed four bedrooms partly below grade.

Courtyards bring light, ventilation, and views to the lower rooms, while the main living areas and master bedroom remain on the principal level. This keeps everyday life compact and close to the lake, with extra rooms available when the family visits.

Design takeaway: Organize a large house around its most frequent pattern of use. Place everyday rooms together, then make guest spaces quieter extensions of the plan. Follow the link to see more: https://midcenturyhome.substack.com/p/a-house-for-twenty-that-feels-right
