Is a Classroom Rabbit a Good Idea?

“Many reputable rescues will not adopt out their rabbits to anyone who intends to house the bunnies in a classroom. Experience has proven this usually leads to a miserable existence and a drastically shortened lifespan for the rabbit.”

Please read this article by Judy Springborn as she describes a few factors which help explain why a classroom is not an ideal place for a rabbit.

This pair was rescued by the neighbors of the people who had them and moved away…leaving the bunnies behind in an outdoor cage. Peter is the brown lop, and Scrunch is his lovely wife. Both are neutered/spayed, and we think they are about 2 years old. Because they were outside previously, they are a little afraid of noises and will run for their hideout for safety (sort of like PTSD). They are very bonded, and Scrunch likes to follow Peter around wherever he goes. They are timid when meeting new humans because as outside rabbits, they weren’t used to interacting with humans that often, but once comfortable, they love coming to you for pets. Their potty skills are good and hopefully will improve even more over time. They love eating lettuce leaves, fruits such as apples and grapes (given in limited amounts, of course). They really enjoy their stackable cups that are filled with pellets. They are quite busy much of the time, now being able to explore their new surroundings without the confine of an outdoor hutch. Peter and Scrunch are super sweet, and have already adjusted to their new foster home, for which their foster mom is thrilled. If you would like to adopt Peter and Scrunch, please email us at [email protected].

***LET’S GET THIS BOY INTO HIS FOREVER HOME!!!***

Pumbaa is a five-year-old neutered male who came from a situation where too many rabbits were kept together in a shed outdoors. He now lives up to his namesake and is loving the indoor lifestyle with no worries! He loves to explore outside of his pen and would love a great big space to play in. He’s very friendly and loves to check in with his humans to see what food they brought him. Pumbaa is looking forward to living “Hakuna Matata” for the rest of his days with his new forever home. If you are interested in Pumbaa, please email us at [email protected]

Augusta and her daughters and have all been spayed and are bonded together. They are all great with their litter boxes and are big hay eaters. They also love their evening salads and any treats! Momma enjoys her head rubs, and like her son Hamilton, melts into the floor. Angelica (brown) and Eliza (white) prefer not to be pet, as of now, but will come up and see what’s going on when their foster mom is in their area or while she is making salad. None of them enjoy being picked up or held. They are all quite active, especially the girls, and love playing in their tunnels! They also are chewers and need lots of good things to chew on (like palm plates and apple sticks) as well as a large area to play. They’d love a home with a well bunny proofed room to exercise and lots of time out. If you are interested in this bonded trio, please email us at [email protected].

Scotty is a spayed female rabbit that is about three years old. She’s a very sweet and gentle girl. She has great litter skills and loves to do binkies when she’s out for exercise. Cilantro is her favorite veggie but she’s a good eater all around and especially loves her Timothy hay. Like most rabbits, she doesn’t like to be held but loves to be petted. She will flatten out like a pancake when you pet her! She would like to find a loving forever home and would be open to finding a husbun to love and snuggle with. If you would like to adopt Scotty, please email us at [email protected].

Raspberry (or Razzie or Razz) is a spunky boy. His long ears add to his personality with one solidly up and the other lopped. He was rescued on July 5th, 2024, from outside in a neighborhood and was estimated to be 2-3 months old at the time. He has a lot of energy and is curious and attention-seeking. He is not free-roam, as we have multiple bunnies, but we make sure he gets time to run around in a bigger area every day and he really needs this “recess time”. Razzie thinks he is Houdini and always checks the perimeter to see if he can escape from his pen. He likes to dig and pull, so we make sure he has cardboard and enrichment opportunities – bunny-proofing is a necessity. He’s not a fan of cloth (having a sheet on the floor) and prefers a cool, slick floor such as tile or wood – It’s better for running and then sliding across the floor. When I, his foster mom, step into his pen or his free roam area, he hops circles around my feet and craves attention. He likes to get pets and will either sit with me or hop around near me and boop me with his nose. One of his favorite activities is to smell his humans’ fingers and he also likes “scritches” on his head (when we rub the top of his head with our fingertips). Razzie also has a puzzle that he likes to spin around to get the treats out. He eats timothy hay and pellets, a little fruit (apple, blueberry, strawberry tops) and veggies (kale, brussel sprouts, green leaf lettuce, cilantro, parsley, carrot bits). He is neutered. Razzie always pees in his litter box and does fairly well pooping mostly in the litter box. Like most bunnies, he’s not a big fan of being picked up, but we have been able to pick him up when needed. Razzie may be interested in a bunny companion as he is always looking for attention and companionship and was pretty gentle when playing around our geriatric lady bun. If you are interested in Raspberry, please email us at [email protected].

Ed is a two-year-old neutered male who came from a situation where too many rabbits were kept together in a shed outdoors. While he was living in this overcrowded situation, he suffered some injuries to his back that needed to be treated when he was brought to the vet. The vet had to shave his back to treat the punctures, but the hair is growing back nicely now and will probably not even be noticeable in the future! Despite his rough start in life, he is a very sweet boy now, albeit camera shy. He is a little shy at first, but he can easily be bribed with treats like apples and bananas. He also loves to eat greens, hay, and pellets. He may do well with a spayed female to spend the rest of his days with. If you are interested in Ed, please email us at [email protected].

Dax and Toffee are a bonded pair of rabbits, both neutered and spayed. Dax is the spotted one and Toffee is black. They both were found running loose in a neighborhood in October 2022 and we believe they were under a year old at the time. They love their daily fresh veggies and a treat of apple, banana, blueberry, grape or dried cranberry. They’re very curious so they like to search every area of the room and flipping their stacking cups is a favorite thing they like to do. Both enjoy chewing cardboard and playing with other toys too. We always have cardboard available for them. Dax will try to nibble on some carpet and wood but is easily redirected. Bunny-proofing is a must where they will free roam. They are both healthy, but Toffee has a persistent head tilt. She gets around the familiar environment of their pen – she jumps and zooms around in there. She will tentatively walk around when exploring new environments. She can effectively scan her surroundings using her left/top eye. Functionally, Toffee is able to hop in and out of the litter box, eat hay, eats pellets out of a bowl, pick up food off the floor and drink water out of a bowl – all the things an upright bunny can do! Dax and Toffee are both very soft and open to being petted, especially when they have had a chance to get to know someone. They like moving their hidey house and toys around in their pen. Their litter box skills are good. They are both very sweet and would be a fun pair of bunnies to have in your home. If you are interested in Dax and Toffee, please email us at [email protected].

Cinna (white with black spots) and Bramble (all black) are a bonded pair who like to cuddle and play. Cinna is a sassy feisty female who is outgoing especially if you have treats for her. Bramble is a quieter male but also motivated by treats. Both bunnies will be eating out of your hands once they get to know you and trust you. They enjoy each other’s company, as well as their occasional “me time” in their own boxes. They like running and the company of people in their home. They are currently in a foster home with a well-behaved dog and do fine with that. If you are interested in Cinna and Brumble, please email us at [email protected].
