Some good information on Leptospirosis
A city sidewalk, a backyard, a puddle on the daily walk. Dogs can encounter the bacteria that cause leptospirosis in places that are part of ordinary life.
Research by Dr. Jane Sykes of the University of California, Davis, and colleagues expanded understanding of this serious disease and the dogs at risk.
Their work documented infections in dogs not traditionally considered at risk, including small dogs and those living in cities.
That research contributed to the evidence behind broader vaccination guidance. In 2024, the American Animal Hospital Association updated its guidelines to recommend leptospirosis vaccination as a core vaccine for all dogs.
Preventing this infection protects dogs and can reduce risk for people, who can also become infected.
