October is Pit Bull Awareness Month. ❤️🐾
People love to throw around “statistics” about pit bulls—often without context, and sometimes inaccurately.
But would you use crime statistics to assume every person of a particular race is a potential murderer? Or would you recognize how ridiculous it is to judge an individual solely by the group they look like?
Nobody is denying that pit bulls have attacked people or other animals. What we’re saying is that every dog is an individual, with its own temperament, personality, and history.
Take Bonnie. She’s peacefully interacted with everything from ferrets to horses, once caught up to a squirrel without harming it, and served as a hospital therapy dog. When a toy poodle attacked her there, she hid behind me rather than fight back.
I’ve fostered multiple pit bull–type dogs, as have friends in rescue. Ironically, the only dog that ever tried to attack my cats or a human was a German Shepherd.
Does that make every pit bull gentle, every German Shepherd dangerous, or every toy poodle aggressive?
Of course not. Because that would be ridiculous.
And that’s exactly my point.
Breed alone doesn’t tell you everything about the animal standing in front of you. Whether you have two legs or four, I’ll judge you by your individual character, not your appearance.
And frankly, I’ve met plenty of humans Bonnie could teach a thing or two about being a decent individual. ❤️🐾
