👻 As fun as it sounds to bring your dog trick-or-treating, most dogs aren’t having as much fun as we might think. 🎃 Between the costumes, doorbells, spooky decorations, excited kids, and unexpected noises, Halloween can be a lot for our pups!

A few tips to help your dog have a less spooky Halloween:

👻 Leave your dog at home.
Let them enjoy a quiet, comfortable space away from the Halloween chaos.

👻 Get your walks in early.
Take your dog for their usual walk before the trick-or-treating begins and the sirens start going off.

👻 Take one last potty break.
Give your pup a chance to go outside before the doorbell starts ringing and the trick-or-treaters arrive. If your dog struggles with doorbells, sit outside and handout candy or leave candy out for others away from the door.

👻 Keep them safe and comfortable.
If your dog finds the noise and activity stressful, turn on some background noise, offer a favorite enrichment activity, and let them settle somewhere they feel safe.

Remember, your dog doesn’t need to be a part of the party to be a party animal. Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is let them sit this one out. 🧡✌️

🎃 Halloween can be fun for your dog, too, but it’s important to make sure they’re included in ways that feel safe and comfortable for them.

Costumes, doorbells, strangers, decorations, candy, and lots of activity can be a LOT for our dogs to process. The good news? You don’t have to leave your dog out of the fun. You just need a plan that supports their comfort, confidence, and individual needs.

Dog parents waiting for their dog’s behavior to magically improve because their trainer promised “FAST RESULTS…” 👀

Real behavior change isn’t about flipping a switch.

Your dog is learning new skills, building confidence, and practicing how to respond differently in real-life situations. And that takes time, repetition, and a training plan that actually fits your dog in front of you.

Some changes may happen quickly. Others take more time.

The goal isn’t to rush your dog through the process just so we can say they’re “fixed.”

The goal is to build lasting skills that hold up in real life. 💛

When selecting a dog trainer, keep these AVSAB guidelines in mind:

✨Evidence-Based Practices: They should rely on scientific methods and modern dog training methods.

✨Uses Positive Reinforcement: Effective training focuses on rewarding good behavior. Steer clear of trainers who rely on aversive tools or methods, as these can negatively affect your dog’s psychological well-being and physical development and may cause future fear/aggression behaviors.

✨Individualized Approach: Training should be tailored to your dog’s specific needs.

✨Continual Education: They should stay updated with the latest training techniques.

✨No Guarantees: Be wary of trainers who promise quick fixes or guaranteed results.

✨Vaccination Requirements: Ensure they prioritize the health and safety of all dogs.

Choosing a dog trainer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your dog, as it can significantly influence their future behaviors and wellbeing.

Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and our dogs need the skills to adapt! 💛

Teaching your dog to move their body in different ways helps build flexibility, coordination, and body awareness that carry over into everyday life.

Games like backing up, pivoting on a low platform, and walking on uneven or textured surfaces encourage your dog to problem-solve, adjust their movements, and become more confident navigating new situations.

And there’s a physical bonus, too! These exercises engage the core and rear chain muscles, helping build strength, balance, and stability that support healthy movement and may help reduce injury risk.

Because we’re not just teaching party tricks. We’re helping our dogs become more adaptable, confident companions who are ready for whatever life throws their way.

🍂 If you have a chaotic dog who barks or lunges at every distraction...

Try giving their brain something else to focus on: sniffing!

And fall gives us the perfect opportunity to turn a pile of leaves into a fun Find It game. 🍁

Here’s how to play:

🍂 Toss a treat into a pile of leaves
🍂 Cue “Find It!” or “Search!”
🍂 Let your dog use their nose to sniff it out
🍂 Repeat and let them enjoy the process!

Sniffing is a great decompression activity to add to your walks. It gives your dog an opportunity to slow down, gather information, use their brain, and engage in a natural behavior they love.

You don't always need to keep moving to have a productive walk. Sometimes, stopping to sniff is exactly what your dog needs.

So the next time you're out enjoying fall in Lansing, let your dog Find It in the leaves! 🍂💛
