Celebrating Dr. Lila Miller who was known as “the Mother of Shelter Medicine." 💚

In celebration of Black History Month, CAHS would like to recognize the contributions made by Dr. Lila Miller, known as “the Mother of Shelter Medicine” to the animal sheltering community. Much of the success CAHS has had in placing animals in loving homes can be credited to improvements in sheltering developed and advocated by Dr. Miller.

As one of the first Black women to graduate from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977, Dr. Miller has devoted her career to aiding homeless animals.

When she graduated, life for pets in animal shelters was very different from today. Annual euthanasia rates were in the multi-millions, with animals often put down due to a lack of space, minor temperament issues, or treatable illnesses.

Back then, Dr. Miller notes, caring for those animals wasn’t widely seen as a promising career path. “There was a real stigma attached to veterinarians working in shelters,” she recalls. “The perception was that the only vets who worked there were at the end of their careers, or they couldn’t hack it in the real world.”

Today, thanks in large part to Dr. Miller’s efforts, shelter medicine is its own recognized specialty. It’s essentially a hybrid of two fields, combining the practices of large-animal veterinarians (managing the health of creatures living closely together in large groups, like herds of dairy cows) with that of companion animal vets, who care for individual dogs, cats, and other household pets.

Shelter medicine also addresses how the stress and logistics of living in a shelter can impact both mental and physical wellbeing. “One of the things we’ve implemented, that I’m very proud of, is understanding the importance of environmental and behavioral enrichment,” Dr. Miller says. “In the past, you’d put an animal in a cage and give them food and water, and that was it. Now, we recognize that the animal needs so much more.”

Throughout her career, Dr. Miller has helped countless shelters and at-risk animals. In the late seventies, as an animal care supervisor for the ASPCA—which then operated five full-service shelters in NYC—she developed and implemented new animal care and triage training programs for staff and created new adoptability criteria to move animals out of shelters quickly to prevent the spread of disease.

Dr. Miller also co-taught the first shelter medicine class at Cornell. She co-founded the Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) and co-authored ASV’s 2010 Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters, the first scientific document by veterinarians that addresses the care and welfare of shelter animals. Dr. Miller also co-edited four shelter medicine textbooks that are widely used today, and she lectures at veterinary colleges and conferences around the world.

We don't take it lightly that we are in a position to provide comfort and care to both pets and humans during the final moments of a pet's life.

Thank you. We are here for you always. 💚
