Ah yes… the first warm day in Michigan 🌞
The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and suddenly:

• Your dog has unlimited energy and selective hearing 🐕
• Your cat is this close to making a jailbreak 🐈
• And the wildlife has returned like, “miss us?” 🦝

Spring is beautiful… and also a little chaotic.

So here’s your official Jolly Road Veterinary Hospital Spring Survival Guide:

🌷 Schedule your pet’s checkup (because winter fluff hides a lot)
🌷 Donate to a local rescue or shelter—breeding season is upon us 👀
🌷 Be kind to your vet staff—we’re running on caffeine and compassion
🌷 Keep an eye on what your pets are eating outside (spoiler: it’s always something questionable)
🌷 And maybe… just maybe… don’t trust the dog off-leash on Day 1 of “nice weather”

We love this time of year, even with the mud, the zoomies, and the mystery snacks.

Now tell us—what’s the most unhinged thing your pet has done to celebrate spring? Bonus points for photos 📸👇

🐾 Happy Friday! 🐾

We usually share a Fun Case Friday, but today we thought we’d send everyone into the weekend with a quick pet care reminder for all of our furry, feathered, and scaly friends!

🌿 Weekend Pet Safety Tip:
Many common household plants and flowers can be toxic to pets. Lilies, sago palms, tulips, and daffodils are just a few examples that can cause serious illness in dogs, cats, and even some exotic pets. If you’re bringing home flowers or doing a little spring decorating this weekend, make sure they’re placed well out of reach—or choose pet-safe options!

🦜 For our exotic pet families: Birds, rabbits, reptiles, and small mammals can also be sensitive to household items like scented candles, essential oils, and certain cleaning products. Good ventilation and pet-safe products go a long way in keeping them healthy.

✨ Your weekend checklist:
✔ Fresh water
✔ Clean enclosures/litter boxes
✔ Safe toys and enrichment
✔ Lots of love (the most important one!)

We hope you and your pets have a safe, relaxing weekend! Feel free to share a photo of what your pet is up to this weekend in the comments. 📸🐶🐱🦎🦜🐰

An enjoyable read in the pre-spring sunshine!
🌞🦜When Spring Sunshine Changes Everything!🦜🌞

As we continue to highlight the longer days here in Michigan, we’re not the only ones noticing the extra sunshine… our exotic pets are too! 🌷

This week we saw several reptile and bird patients whose health changes were directly tied to seasonal light cycle shifts.

What’s the common thread in these instances?
Photoperiod changes — the natural increase in daylight hours.

☀️ Why This Matters for Exotic Pets:
Unlike dogs and cats, many reptiles and birds are highly sensitive to changes in daylight length. In the wild, longer days signal:
😎Breeding season
😎Hormonal shifts
😎Increased activity
😎Changes in appetite
😎Behavioral changes

Even indoor pets can respond to:
😎More natural light through windows
😎Shifts in household lighting schedules
😎Seasonal UVB changes
😎Warmer ambient temps

🏡 What We’re Recommending This Spring:

✔️ Double-check UVB bulb strength and age (most need replacing every 6–12 months!)
✔️ Ensure consistent light/dark cycles (10–12 hours for many species, species dependent)
✔️ Watch for hormonal behaviors in birds
✔️ Monitor appetite and activity changes
✔️ Reach out if something feels “off”

Sometimes what looks like illness is seasonal adjustment — and sometimes seasonal shifts can unmask underlying health issues.

Michigan sunshine is finally back ☀️ If you have a reptile, bird, or other exotic pet, now is a great time for a spring wellness check!

🌸🐾 Fun Case Friday: Pre-Parasite Prevention!! 🐾🌸

Michigan is finally starting to warm up (we made it 😅), and while we’re all eagerly getting excited for sunshine and fresh air… so are fleas, ticks, and parasites 👀

As the weather changes, we start to see a BIG increase in:
🪳 Fleas
🕷️ Ticks
🦠 Intestinal parasites
🦟 Mosquitos (hello heartworm disease 👀).
These parasites are already making their return — and they don’t wait until summer to start causing problems. Sometimes with early seasonal changes and the weather getting warmer for a few days to weeks is just enough for these bugs to make an appearance.

🦠 Why this matters
Parasites aren’t just annoying — they can cause real health issues for your pets:
🪳 Fleas → itching, skin infections, allergic reactions
🕷️ Ticks → Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses
🦠 Intestinal parasites → diarrhea, weight loss, poor growth
🦟 Heartworm disease → serious, potentially life-threatening heart and lung disease

And the tricky part…
👉 You often won’t see them until your pet is already affected.

🛡️ Prevention = Protection
The best defense is staying ahead of them before they become a problem.

Prevention is:
• Easy to administer
• More affordable to buy now than treat later
• Healthier than contracting any of the diseases above

We recommend:
✔ Monthly flea & tick prevention
✔ Year-round heartworm prevention
✔ Routine f***l testing and Accuplex testing
✔ Regular wellness exams

Even indoor pets are at risk — parasites are sneaky and can hitch a ride inside.

💡 Fun fact
It only takes:
• 1 flea to start an infestation
• 1 mosquito bite to transmit heartworm disease
• 1 tick to transmit disease

That’s why prevention matters more than ever this time of year!

Keep your pets happy, healthy, and itch-free so they can enjoy the warmer weather just as much as you do ☀️🐶🐱

As we head into spring, now is the perfect time to make sure your pet is protected and ready for all the outdoor adventures ahead and If you’re not sure what prevention your pet is on (or if they’re due), we’re always happy to help create a plan that fits your pet’s lifestyle! 🌷🐕

💗 Fun Post Friday 💗

Valentine’s weekend has us feeling extra thankful for all the love we get to see every day from our amazing patients and their families!

Something many people don’t realize is how much comfort items help pets while they’re in the clinic. Blankets and towels help keep patients warm during recovery, reduce stress during hospital stays, and make nervous pets feel a little more at home while they’re with us.

Right now, our supply is getting low and we would LOVE your help! 💕

🧺 We are accepting mainly blanket donations but would appreciated towel donations too!
We can use:
• New or gently used blankets
• Small comfort blankets
• Fleece throws
• Towels

These get used daily for surgery recovery, hospitalized pets, and anxious visitors who need a little extra comfort.

If you’ve been decluttering or want to spread some Valentine’s kindness, we would be so grateful for any donations ❤️

Thank you for always helping us care for your pets like family. 🐾

Happy Valentines Day! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Love,
Jolly Road Veterinary Hospital

❄️February Freeze Edition❄️
Checking in on you all on this cold and dreary Monday morning.

We may have missed a few "Fun Case Fridays" (thanks, illnesses + life + weather 😅), but we’re always here—and so is this brutal winter weather.

Cold temperatures don’t just affect us… they can impact dogs, cats, and exotics in ways we don’t always expect!

Quick Winter Facts:
🐶 Dogs & cats can get dry skin, arthritis flare-ups, and frostbite risks
🐱 Indoor cats may be less active → weight gain + boredom
🦎 Reptiles & exotics rely entirely on proper heat and humidity
🐰 Small mammals need drafts blocked and warm, dry bedding

If your pet seems stiff, lethargic, not eating, or just “off,” winter might be playing a role.

Stay warm, stay cozy, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re worried 💙

We’re all surviving winter one heat lamp & hoodie at a time 🧣🔥

Hello Jolly Roaders,

We got the unfortunate gift of a green bag of p**p from our mailbox last night with no indicators as to who it belongs too.

Please call our clinic so we can determine if it is your p**p.

That is all.

🎉🐾Fun Case Friday: New Year, New Goals🐾🎉

New Year’s resolutions aren’t just for us — our pets deserve a strong start to 2026, too!
Whether their goal is fewer vet visits, more zoomies, or finally losing those extra holiday pounds, a little planning now sets them up for a healthier year ahead.

✨ 2026 Pet Resolutions We Love: ✨

🐶 Stay Up to Date on Preventative Care
• Annual (or biannual) wellness exams
• Core & lifestyle vaccines
• Heartworm testing and prevention
• Flea & tick protection year-round

🐱 Check in on the Inside Stuff
• Annual bloodwork (especially for seniors!)
• Baseline labs for young pets
• Early detection = easier management later

🦜🦎🐰 Exotics Need Resolutions Too!
• Yearly wellness exams are just as important
• Nutrition reviews and enclosure checks
• UVB, heat gradients, humidity, and weight monitoring

📅 Plan Ahead for 2026
• Schedule upcoming exams early
• Set reminders for preventatives
• Don’t wait until something is wrong to check in

💡 Fun Case Friday reminder:
Some of our most interesting cases start with “They seemed totally fine!” Preventative care helps us catch problems before they become emergencies.

Let’s make 2026 the year of prevention, early detection, and happier, healthier pets 🐾
If your pet is due (or overdue 👀), give us a call — we’d love to help you start the year off right!

🎊 Happy New Year from all of us — here’s to a healthy 2026! 🎊
