Most afternoons in the mountain town of Idyllwild, California, the mayor can be found riding through town in the back of an SUV, wearing a tie and greeting residents with enthusiastic barks.
His name is Mayor Max.
And yes, he's a golden retriever.
Visitors often do a double take when they learn that Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller III is the town's beloved mayor. But in Idyllwild, that's been perfectly normal for more than a decade.
The story began in 2012 when a local animal rescue held a fundraising election for mayor. Residents could nominate their pets, and votes cost $1 each, with all proceeds going to help animals in need.
A Golden Retriever named Max won in a landslide, defeating 13 other dogs and two cats while raising thousands of dollars for rescue efforts.
When the original Mayor Max passed away, another Golden Retriever, Mayor Max II, carried on the tradition. Eventually, the title passed to Mayor Max III, who now serves as the town's mayor for life.
Technically, Idyllwild isn't an incorporated city and doesn't have an official mayor. But ask anyone in town, and they'll tell you that Mayor Max is very real.
His days are packed with appearances at community events, fundraisers, schools, hospitals, ribbon cuttings, weddings, birthdays, and local festivals. Visitors line up to meet him, snap a photo, and say hello to the town's most famous resident.
And unlike many politicians, Mayor Max's mission is refreshingly simple.
Spread joy.
No campaign speeches.
No political arguments.
No promises he can't keep.
Just a friendly dog in a tie, showing up wherever he's needed and making people smile.
His owner, Phyllis Mueller, says the goal has never been fame or politics. It's about bringing happiness to people and helping support the community that embraced him.
Judging by Mayor Max's popularity, it's working.
After all, it's hard to argue with a leader whose entire platform consists of kindness, community, and being a very good boy.
