Kepner aka Biggie Smolz aka Biggie aka Bigs turns a year old at the end of October! 🎉🎉🎉

Kepner came to us from a fellow rescuer in early January, who had been struggling to get her to eat and grow and was out of ideas but desperate to help her. Even though they had tried all the things we ourselves would do, we agreed to give her a go ourselves, and picked her up when she was just 10 weeks old and barely over a pound in size (most kittens weigh a pound by four weeks of age).

After nearly two months of going back-and-forth with getting her better, only for her to stall in progress and become sick again, finally, in March, we got her over the hump for good. By then Kepner was five months old and finally the size of a 3-month-old, but all that mattered is she was finally eating and growing - not just surviving listlessly, but thriving enthusiastically. Eight weeks of medical care and supportive nutrition (fluids and specialty foods & supplements) had done the job, her immune system finally seemed to kick in and do its job, and she was actively seeking out and benefitting from nourishment - and we could see it in her filled-out face, the bigger number on the scale, and in her happier demeanor and increased energy. We stopped holding our breath and hovering over her, and Kepner finally got to enjoy life as a happy, *healthy* kitten without having to constantly endure a barrage of medical treatments in order to stay alive.

We genuinely did not expect to see Kepner live to three months, let alone six...and now twelve. She never did learn how to play, and she is still small (4.4 pounds, and our fosters usually surpass her in size by the time they hit three months), but she is healthy - and happy, OH SO HAPPY (although with her facial expression permanently stuck in Resting Brat Face mode, you'd never know it), with her favoritest human, Mr. FFF. We joke that Mr. FFF gave her the will to carry on and live, but she loves him - and he loves her right back., and we love to see how much they love each other. 🥰

Happy First Birthday, Kepner! 🥳🧁🎈🎉 We're so glad you made it, and we cherish you and the special bond you have with Mr. FFF.

We were going to provide a funny update on Sunset, and how she is the ANGRIEST kitten we have ever met (although most of her rage seems directed at the female FFF humans - she adores Mr. FFF, the non-binary FFF household member, and an FFF-adjacent male human).

But instead we are here to quickly share our fears for Simic (red Lebanon kitten) - we believe he is developing wet FIP. Over the last few weeks he has lost weight and energy, and he has also developed a suspicious, fluid-filled pot belly. Those of you who have dealt with wet FIP - you know a FIP belly from a worm belly. Still, we wormed again just to make sure that possibility was covered.

We shouldn't be surprised, given just how incredibly sick and malnourished all four boys were - and the fact that their sister died, despite our best efforts to save her. But we're still sad and disappointed, and we're always going to worry that there was more we could have done, or there was something we missed.

But the truth is, FIP is the body's immune system developing an abnormal response after an exposure to a regular strain of the coronavirus, which almost every cat is exposed to at least once in their lives (and who knows what these little ones were exposed to before we scooped them up).

And statistically, given everything Simic and his brothers have gone through (young malnourished, neglected, kittens born to a young, malnourished, neglected kitten, who was born to a young, malnourished, neglected kitten; all of whom were exposed to a whole host of illnesses and diseases including non-regenerative anemia, coccidia, and giardia), we should only be surprised the it's ONLY Simic who is sick (so far...).

Supportive care has already started - we'll update with more as soon as we get Simic to a vet!

Mr. FFF works hard to do his part to help take care of the FFF kittens - socializing and snuggling are his specialties! 🥰

Janus is now 7 months old and is no longer the tiny, human-dependent 3-week-old bottle baby who was fished out of a puddle and brought to a doorstep for help, but that doesn't mean he outgrew his love of milkies (KMR - kitten formula). He just now drinks them out of a bowl instead of from a bottle (although it took a while to break him of that habit - notably, just last month he stole a bottle from a three week old baby and proceeded to try to get it into his mouth to suckle from!).

Without further ado, we present Janus's "milkies, please?" face - an expression that never changes despite his growth. 💗

Happy 🐈Caturday🐈 from Simic, Izzet, Orzhov, and Boros - now four months old and ready for neutering and their purrever homes!

🐈‍⬛🐈 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗙𝗢𝗢𝗗: 𝗱𝗿𝘆 𝗸𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗲 (𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗹𝘁) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗱 (𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻)! 🐈 🐈‍⬛

The most rewarding part of cat rescue is seeing our late nights, round-the-clock care, and non-stop dedication pay off as we pull sick and struggling kittens back from the brink (and out of the Grim Reaper's clutches). 💗💗💗

The only downside? Once those little survivors start feeling better, they develop absolute black-hole appetites!

Between feeding recovering foster kitties, supporting other local rescuers/trappers and members of the community with emergent food needs, and now ramping up our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and colony management efforts to prep community cats for winter (more food = more fat to insulate/feed their organs), our kibble/can reserves have hit critically-low levels. We need to keep these cats healthy for the cold months ahead while building trust with newcomers so we can spay/neuter to prevent future litters from having to be born into struggle and suffering.

We would deeply appreciate any support you can offer to help us keep these bowls full and these rescue efforts going strong.
