One last reminder before the weekend, please keep your pets safe!

~Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin. Even pets that are usually calm can panic and try to run away

~Create a quiet, secure space in an interior room with their bed, favorite toys, water, and a familiar blanket

~Close windows, curtains, and blinds to reduce noise and flashes of light

~Play calming background noise, such as a TV, fan, or soft music, to help mask the sound of fireworks

~Exercise dogs earlier in the day so they have a chance to burn off energy before the fireworks start. Walk them well before dark

~Check collars and ID tags to make sure your contact information is current. If your pet is microchipped, verify that the registration details are up to date

~Don't bring pets to fireworks displays. The loud noises, crowds, and bright lights can be overwhelming

~Watch for signs of stress, including trembling, pacing, panting, hiding, drooling, whining, or trying to escape

~Stay calm yourself. Your pet may take cues from your behavior. Offer comfort if they seek it, but don't force interaction if they prefer to hide

~Keep hazardous items out of reach. Fireworks, sparklers, glow sticks, lighter fluid, and food from celebrations can all pose risks if chewed or swallowed

This week is going to be a toasty! Hot weather can be dangerous for pets because they don't regulate body temperature the same way people do. Dogs and cats mainly cool themselves through panting (and, for cats, grooming), which is much less effective than sweating.

Please make sure to:

*Provide constant access to fresh, cool water

*Keep them in the shade or indoors during the hottest part of the day, typically late morning through early evening

*Exercise early in the morning or after sunset when temperatures are lower

*Avoid hot pavement. [If it's too hot to comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds, it's hot enough to burn your pet's paw pads]

*Never leave a pet in a parked car. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside can rise to dangerous levels within minutes

*Watch for signs of overheating, including:
~Excessive panting or difficulty breathing
~Drooling more than usual
~Bright red or pale gums
~Weakness, lethargy, or stumbling
~Vomiting or diarrhea
~Collapse or seizures
