Project POOCH provides life-changing opportunities for adjudicated youth and shelter dogs. Project POOCH, Inc.

Project POOCH has successfully paired hundreds of youth incarcerated at MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Woodburn, Oregon, with homeless shelter dogs since 1993. Youths (guided by professionals) learn to train the dogs, groom them, and find them new adoptive forever homes. The dogs leave the program ready to be great pets, while their trainers re-enter the community with new job and personal skills and increased compassion and respect for all life. is recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, Tax ID # 93-1252054 – donations are tax-deductible.

NEW for 2026! We have 6 unique POOCH Dog stickers as incentives for our Give!Guide donors. Donate $25+ from Nov. 1–10 to receive the JASMINE sticker. Jasmine is one of our current POOCH pups, and we are just enamored by her silly snaggle tooth and underbite, and we hope you are too! She will make a great addition to your water bottle, laptop case, phone case, or anywhere else you like to use stickers.

Have you seen our Willamette Week Give!Guide intro yet? We may not be graphic designers, but I think the dogs do a good job at making things look great! You might even recognize some current and past POOCHes from this year.

Goooooood morning! As we awake on a new day (with an extra hour of sleep!) in a new month, it is time to get the ball rolling for another Willamette Week Give!Guide season!

In case you have forgotten, or you’re new to our socials - Give!Guide is an amazing opportunity to fundraisers for our little nonprofit. They provide matching days, Big Give incentive days, and other perks like today’s kickoff. For every $10 donation you will be entered to win that days prize.

Today is the opportunity to win a 1 pound bag of coffee from Nossa Familia Coffee (yummm)!

You will have twelve chances to bring home the beans, as three winners will be chosen at 4 different times today. The pool is cumulative, so boost your odds by getting your donation in early! (And you can donate multiple times if you’re a real fiend for the caffeine!)

Check out our page on Give!Guide to peek at our own incentives, and support POOCH through another year of helping youth help dogs.

Can we be nostalgic for pretty sunsets yet? It’s set to be a rainy week!

Our longest residents were looking pretty in the glow of the sunset this past weekend.

Kimchi says you can wake her when the rain is over.

We didn’t have the heart to tell her the forecast! 🩷

Current POOCH pup Jasmine would like to thank former POOCH pup Tod for his generous donation of 2 cases of wet food for her and her POOCH friends. Thank you, Tod and family! We appreciate you!

Our youth worked on “load up” with our two new POOCH dogs today. While the skill of loading into the van in the same, sometimes our approaches are different. Smaller or more timid dogs might like to climb in the side, while dogs who are more confident and outgoing are happy to leap head first into the back, and even the crate.

Here at POOCH we strive for at least two walks a day with our dogs. This is a time where we can practice some of the training that we’ve been doing at the kennel, such as name, recognition and handler engagement. It also gives us an opportunity to practice our leash skills in a setting that can be a little bit more distracting. Just because we’re moving around, doesn’t mean that the campus halts activity. The dogs still see cars, other people moving around, and they see the other dogs on our walk. This sort of experience gives them a leg up in joining your household! Now, that’s not to say they’re ready for a busy Portland city stroll, but they have the foundations to be your new waking companion.
