ACES is hiring a full-time veterinary technician who wants to keep learning, work hands-on and make a meaningful contribution to each patient’s care.

Our technicians are actively involved throughout the day; from patient monitoring, laboratory testing and treatment support to surgical preparation, anesthesia recovery, client communication and detailed medical records.

We love hearing that, and routine veterinary care can help keep it that way.

Cats are remarkably good at hiding pain, illness, and changes in how they feel. At home, gradual weight loss, dental discomfort, reduced mobility, or subtle behavior changes can be easy to miss.

A routine examination gives your veterinarian an opportunity to track changes over time, examine your cat from nose to tail, and recommend preventive care or screening based on their age, lifestyle, and health history.

And yes, indoor cats need routine care, too. 💚

Wondering what actually happens during an exotic-pet examination?

The good news: you don’t need to know all the right questions before you arrive.
We start by learning what is normal for your pet: their diet, habitat, daily routine, activity, appetite, and any changes you’ve noticed. Photos of the enclosure and your pet’s food, supplements, lighting, or heat setup can be helpful, too.

Next, our veterinary team observes your pet and performs a species-appropriate physical exam. Depending on the animal, this may include weight and body condition along with checks of the eyes, mouth, skin, fur, feathers or scales, movement, heart, lungs, and other species-specific areas.

If additional testing could help, we’ll explain what we recommend and why. Not every patient needs the same diagnostics; recommendations depend on the species, age, history, and examination findings.

Meet Stefano, one of the veterinary technicians behind the medicine at ACES! 💚

For the past three years, Stefano has helped care for the wide variety of patients who come through our doors. We asked him a few questions so you could get to know him better:

Does your pet count as an exotic pet? The answer may surprise you. 🐹🐍🐢🐓

In veterinary medicine, “exotic pet” doesn’t necessarily mean wild, rare, or dangerous. It is often used as a broad term for companion animals other than dogs and cats.

That can include:
🦜 Birds
🦎 Reptiles and amphibians
🐰 Rabbits and other small mammals
🐹 Pocket pets such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, mice, ferrets and chinchillas

Although these animals may be grouped together as “exotics,” their medical, nutritional and environmental needs can be completely different. A hamster is not simply a tiny dog, and a tortoise requires very different care from a cat.

That is why finding a veterinary team familiar with your pet’s species matters.

A few seconds today could help bring your pet home someday. 💚

For Check the Chip Day, we’re showing just how quickly a pet’s microchip can be scanned.

If your pet is already microchipped, take a moment to:
✔️ Have the chip scanned to confirm it can be read
✔️ Make sure it is registered
✔️ Update your phone number, address, and emergency contact with the registry

Remember: a microchip is not a GPS tracker. It contains an identification number that can help a veterinary hospital or shelter reconnect a lost pet with their family, but that connection depends on accurate registration information.

Happy World Lizard Day! 🦎

Lizards often hide signs of illness, so even subtle changes in their appearance or behavior can be important.

Here are three warning signs you shouldn’t ignore:

1️⃣ Sunken or closed eyes
Eyes that appear sunken, or remain closed during normal waking hours, may indicate that your lizard needs veterinary attention.

2️⃣ Swollen limbs or joints
New or unusual swelling in the legs, feet, or joints should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.

3️⃣ Not eating
A sudden loss of appetite or repeatedly refusing food can be a sign that something isn’t right.

These symptoms can have several possible causes, and an examination is the best way to determine what your pet needs. If you notice one or more of these changes, call ACES at (281) 941-4720 to schedule an exotic-pet examination.
