: CHINESE CRESTED DOGS
- Chinese Cresteds come in two varieties: Hairless and Powderpuff. Surprisingly, both can be born in the same litter.
- The Hairless variety aren't completely hairless, they usually have soft hair on their head, tail, and feet, often called their “crest,” “plume,” and “socks.”
- Their skin needs skincare too! They are prone to sunburn and may even need pet-safe sunscreen.
- Despite their name, many historians believe the breed may have origins linked to Africa before becoming popular on Chinese trading ships.
- Chinese Cresteds are known for being incredibly affectionate and are often called “Velcro dogs” because they love sticking close to their humans.
- They’re one of the most expressive dog breeds and are famous for their funny facial expressions and dramatic personalities.
- The Powderpuff variety has a full silky coat that’s soft like velvet and requires regular grooming to prevent tangles.
- Chinese Cresteds are surprisingly athletic and can excel at agility and trick training.
- They tend to run warm and LOVE blankets, heated beds, sweaters, and cuddling under covers.
- A Chinese Crested named Sam became famous for winning the “World’s Ugliest Dog” contest three years in a row, helping make the breed internationally recognizable.
- They’re generally small dogs, usually weighing only about 8–12 pounds, making them great lap dogs.
- Chinese Cresteds are known for forming very strong emotional bonds with their families and often become deeply attached to one favorite person.
