I know it's a little early but if you have kids and you want to take your puppy with you this season start now. The first time they are usually nervous. Bring high value treats toss them on the ground to help them. Don't stay long just about 5 minutes. Please don't just leave the store right after you left the scary figures take a walk through the store or garden section. Came back again until he's ok with the sights and sounds of Halloween.

Start teaching stay at home on a place board. Puppies learn quickly on a raised surface. Start by just moving a foot a half step, one step mark and reward often. When you take baby steps you can reward often before they make a mistake that they didn't understand yet! Once they do well at home take them to a store. Once again baby steps at the store just one step at a time.

If you like going to the farmers market take your puppy with you. Most are dog friendly!
The first time your pup might be a little nervous with all the different sights sounds and all the people walking around. Go early your first time before the crowd. Bring high value treats to help if they are a little nervous keep a treat in your hand say their name when they glance at you give them a treat. Don't stay long if you're pup is nervous. Come back the next week to walk around again.

When your dog does well at any door or gate start adding Distractions. One at a time. A dog is on the other side of the door at first he wanted to play. If you're dog tries to follow you turn towards them while saying( shhhh) and take a step forward.Ask for sit and stay saying it will calm assertive energy. Yes your dog knows your emotions.

When you want to help your pup and you need help with learning how to help. Please be patient it takes time to understand new behavior that is being asked. All dogs and people learn at a different pace. If you want a board and train please go to have sessions with the trainer and your pup!

The first time you let your pup look at a fluffy new friend make sure you have a leash on. Simply walk past while in a heel position a few times. When you think they will be ok walk up and ask your pup to sit. If they seem a little to interested say their name when they look at you mark and reward with a high value treat. Keep practicing if you don't succeed the first time come back and start again. Always end your session on a pawsitive note

Start training at home using your table and chairs with no distractions. After you sit ask your pup to down and stay. For the first time give him treats often when they stay down. Mark YES and then give them a treat. When they understand at home go to Lowe's or Home Depot they usually have tables and chairs you can use. Same principal after you sit ask for a down. Then you are all set to go to Starbucks and enjoy your cup and your pup.

The last week of a board and train I proof off their newly learned skills. One of the most valuable skills is engagement. A dog who glances at you while walking is not pulling your arm and not trying to meet and greet all who comes by. Once you're pup is doing well with leash work it's time to start off leash work. It's fun to train, just take a few steps leash in hand then drop it. Have a treat in your left hand so they will stay focused on you.

All well behaved dogs should be able to be off lead. I do enjoy walking dogs with out having to hold the lead all the time.
When your pup understands leash work (walking by your side) Start in your yard or a quiet park. Take a few steps forward and drop the lead. I will say their name Teddy lets go. Don't walk to far the first few times. You want them to succeed so you can reward them. When they start to step away while walking say their name and HERE.

Recall is a command every dog should respond to quickly. Start at home with high value treats. Before the leash only ask your puppy to come if you know they will come. After you put the leash on now you have a tool. Ask for them to wait and take a couple of steps back. Make sure you are holding a treat that they can see (holding your hand out in front. Say Oscar come or here. If they don't come simply apply leash pressure to pull them towards you.
