Happy Birthday to this legend! Our OG cactus detection dog Bolt turns 13 today! We love you Boltie!! 💜🩷🤍

When you’re out searching for 🐍 but find 🐢 instead. Muon isn’t trained on turtles so she doesn’t alert to them but being a h**p detection dog she notices these things. Her change in behavior and pause to discriminate the scent cues me into the presence of nests and the one animal we found. By the time I step in to check it out, she’s already off searching for her trained target. It’s super helpful data regardless!

Our resident turtle dog Circe gets to show her stuff on Thursday at a different site. Should be fun!

Muon and I completed surveys for San Francisco garter snakes this past week in the Bay Area peninsula. We worked over three days to discover how these rare reptiles might be using the habitat during their active season. Muon did a great job and we learned a lot. We will be back up next month to visit a new site for more searches.

Not to be outmatched by her coworker, SCENTdog Muon, SCENTdog Circe comes in clutch not only at finding cryptic Pediocactus but also at clearing large areas of landscape where the cacti are not to be found. The speed and accuracy at which the detection dogs can confirm presence is important. However, their ability to verify absence is equally as crucial. The detection dogs shorten survey time while increasing survey coverage compared to humans doing visual walking surveys. And wow, do these two girls have stamina to spare!

Thanks to proper conditioning and regular maintenance training, Circe and Muon literally run circles around us pitiful bipeds. When we are ready to call it a day they are still going strong. It usually takes a good few days to start to see any fatigue since their handlers are mindful about the dogs’ field care, hydration and rest stops.

Teamwork makes the dream work!!

Happy Birthday to Vector the Inspector!!
🎂🎉🎁🎊

Vector, aka V, is our retired ecological detection dog turned certified therapy dog who brings love and hugs to hospital patients, special needs children, and retirees when he isn’t at home making us laugh.

We also like to call him Flat Stanley for his uncanny ability to disappear sideways when he performs his patented flop on the floor, the bed, or the couch.

Happy Birthday, buddy. Here’s a cupcake to another trip around the sun! Thanks for the homemade treats. 🐶

The trapping fairies were with us! 🐍 We had a chance to work with several of these beauties today. SCENTdog Muon got her refresher training on live San Francisco garter snakes. We also collected a good amount of scent samples for training back at the ranch. It was great to get back out to this gorgeous site. Thank you to for allowing us to tag along!
