Did you know there's a dynamic duo you can adopt? Say "hello" to two wonderful horses, Apache and Molly. Apache is a handsome 26 year old gelding and Molly is a beautiful 29 year old mare. 😍 Although neither has been ridden in several years, they have great ground manners and are very calm. Both quarter horses are good with the veterinarian and farrier. We think this awesome duo are destined to live out their days as fantastic companion horses. 🐴 We would like to keep them together in their golden years and as such, would prefer for them to be adopted together. 💞 If you think they're the perfect addition to your barn, check out their pics and inquire about adopting both, today!

Ever heard the saying, “Always bet on the gray?” Gray horses have long been a favorite for many, due to their unique appearance. For thousands of years, gray horses have held a mystical appeal, even believed to have special abilities. 🪄 There are many shades of gray including light, dark, dappled, speckled and even rose tinted. Over time, the appearance of most grays will change, sometimes drastically, to the point where they look white. 🤍 Gray horses can be seen in many breeds, such as thoroughbreds, quarter horses and Andalusian, and are most often traced back to descendants of the Arabian breed.

Gray is classified as a coat color by breed registries, but genetically it is a depigmentation pattern. 🧬 A dominant allele, a horse only requires one copy of the gray allele to be gray in color.

Light grays can often be mistaken for white horses, but they are indeed gray. They are distinguishable with light gray bodies and black around their eyes, nose, inside the ears and between the hind legs. Steel grays are a dark silver with a black base coat that consists of white and gray hairs. They often lighten and dapple as they age. Dapple grays have markings representative of sponge markings or paint splotches, typically all over their body, with dark points on a steel gray base. 🎨 Flea bitten grays have a light gray body with evenly distributed speckles of black or brown. Rose grays are a medium gray with darker points and a red or rose tint. Gray can also affect the spotting patterns of pintos and leopard complex horses (e.g., Appaloosas). The effect of the gray can wash out the contrast of the markings of spotted patterns, sometimes referred to as "ghosting." 👻

Today is and we would like to take this opportunity to stress the importance of proper animal care and ownership. In the U.S., approximately 3.4 million cats are abandoned each year, nearly 40% of which are euthanized. There are over 200,000 “unwanted” horses each year - not including the thousands of unreported cases of neglect and abuse. Together, we can help end these tragedies. February Star Sanctuary strongly supports the education of proper horsemanship and cat care and is a valuable resource for animals in need. We can’t do it alone, though. Did you know there’s a way you can directly help a in need? 🐴 When you with our sanctuary, both you and the horse win! 😃 As a sponsor, you get to directly interact with the horse you choose to sponsor. Your sponsorship fee contributes to the cost of feed for that horse, as well as farrier and veterinary services.

How do you select a horse? If you have a favorite horse, sponsorship allows you to directly contribute to their care. 🐎 Don’t yet have a favorite? This is the perfect opportunity to get to know a horse. Sponsors can participate in essential activities such as grooming, feeding and holding for the farrier. If your horse is rideable, which many are, you can take them out for a ride! 🏇 What’s possibly the best part of sponsorship? Most likely the horse hugs and snuggles! 😘

How will the horse benefit? We believe an important aspect of horse rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and continued care, is encouraging them to interact with individuals outside of our staff. 🤗 We feel that the more people these horses see and get to know, the more love and support they feel. 💖
