Happy Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week 🐾

Many people don’t understand just what responsibilities our veterinary assistants have. These rockstars check in exam rooms, fill prescriptions, restrain animals, draw blood, take x-rays, and keep a constant communication between the clinic and clients for patient follow up. Some are in school to become veterinary technicians to broaden their knowledge and skill set. Without our assistants, our jobs would be a lot harder.

Everyone give a huge shoutout to our veterinary assistants- Claudia, Kat, Amber, and Sean! 💙🤍

It’s time for another ✨Meet the Staff Monday✨

Next up is Dr Francesca Nielsen. Dr Nielsen graduated undergrad from the University of New Hampshire and received her doctorate from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. She has over 15 years in the field and it shows. She is such a knowledgeable asset to our team and any patient who sees her is in amazing hands. When she’s not at Mosel or Gull Road, she can be found sharing her surgical expertise with the Battle Creek Humane Society to help with spaying and neutering their animals. If you look closely, you may see her name in your pet’s records 😉

Give it up for Dr Nielsen! 🎉💙🤍

May is Mental Health Awareness Month-

Veterinary Medicine is one of the fields reported to struggle with the highest amount of mental health crises. We experience grief for our patients and compassion fatigue alongside owners and unfortunately receive many verbal and potentially physical confrontations with frustrated and grieving clients. Veterinary medicine has a shortage of employees all over the United States meaning the smaller group of staff carries a larger physical workload but also a heavier and larger mental load. It is incredibly important to reach out for mental health resources when needed. There is no harm in asking for help. Reach out to your local/state Mental Health Crisis Hotline if you are having suicidal ideation, or other self-harming thoughts. We are all here for you.

Happy World Veterinary Day!

The work of Veterinarians is often overlooked and undervalued. They do just as much schooling as a human doctor but on patients who cannot advocate for themselves. Veterinarians are tasked with using second-hand information to determine illness on their patients as well as being an advocate for those who don’t have a voice.

At Mosel Animal Clinic and Animal Clinic Gull Road, we deeply value our strong team of veterinarians and all of the hard work they do to care for all of our patients and reassure all of our clients. Please share your amazing stories with our veterinarians in the comments 💙🤍

At Animal Clinic Gull Road and Mosel Animal Clinic, we are proud to celebrate Veterinary Receptionist Week and recognize the incredible team members who keep our hospitals running with heart.

Our reception team is so much more than the front desk—they are the first connection our clients have with us and the steady support behind the scenes. Whether it’s greeting clients with a smile, comforting worried pet owners, managing busy schedules, or keeping communication flowing between our teams, they do it all with compassion, professionalism, and grace.

In a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same, our receptionists consistently show patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to both our clients and their pets. They help create the welcoming, supportive atmosphere that defines who we are as a practice.

To our reception team: thank you for everything you do each and every day. Your dedication does not go unnoticed. We appreciate the way you care for our clients, support our medical team, and represent our hospitals so well.

We are incredibly grateful to have such a strong, compassionate group leading the front lines of our client experience.

Please join us in celebrating our amazing reception team this week—they truly make a difference in every interaction.

With appreciation,
Amie & Dr. Buckley

April is Heartworm Awareness Month-

Heartworm (also known as Dirofilaria immitis), is a thin parasite transmitted from the bite of a mosquito both to cats and dogs. The larvae of the worms are carried in the blood from the mosquito and then spread to your pet once bitten by the mosquito. The larvae then mature and reproduce, animals can contain several hundred heartworms once they begin to reproduce. The worms then begin to fill the heart, lungs, and other connected arteries.

There is a current treatment for dogs but it is expensive and requires months of strict cage rest and even after the parasites have been removed, can result in life-long damage to the heart and lungs depending on how long the worms were active in the body. However, there is no current treatment for cats.

The best way to avoid heartworm and concurrent heartworm disease is to have your pet on year-long heaworm prevention and to perform annual heartworm testing.

Signs of heartworm infection can include a mild persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, decreased appetite, and weight loss.
