This time last year the ACBA was in Fayetteville Arkansas attending our second qualifier .. in about 12 days we will be headed to hopefully our third and final one in Ohio.

The road to acceptance has been arduous and eventful, with hurdles around nearly every corner - however our club and members have stood strong and continue to persevere.
To even be considered, and have the opportunity to be apart of this process is a great honor and privilege.

There are blessings in all situations and experiences, even those we may feel have less than desirable outcomes - for we must remember the picture is greater than what we can see in the moment, and all lessons lead to where we are meant to be!

In this photo, we have four generations of cock-birds.

In the first generation, you can see a good foundation and overall type. However, he needed some refinement in his comb (a slight lean), feathering, and tail integrity.

By pairing him to hens that were strong in the areas where he was weaker, we were able to produce a son (Showboy) who maintained similar type while showing improvements in comb structure and feather quality. However, tail was still lacking, with slower development and fullness.

In the third generation, we begin to see better and earlier tail development. However, this generation also took a step back in comb integrity and feather texture, giving us new and old areas to focus on.

And finally, moving into the fourth generation, we’re seeing the results of those continued efforts - a nicely matured tail at a younger age, improved feather integrity, and a beautiful, strong, straight comb with deep, defined serrations.

I share all of this to demonstrate that not every generation is going to look like leaps and bounds of improvement. Sometimes you’ll experience setbacks. Sometimes you’ll correct one trait only to uncover another that needs attention.

And that’s okay.

Breeding is a process of building, evaluating, and making thoughtful decisions along the way. Progress isn’t always a straight line, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t moving in the right direction.

Throw in the towel too soon, and you may miss what’s just around the corner!

I invite you to take a minute and twenty seconds to enjoy babies learning with babies. 🥰🐣

We’re working on “soft hands” with Miss Madeline, while also teaching this little cockerel about gentle handling, trust, and patience.

A little reminder that not everything has to be an argument, a debate, or a battle to be won.

Some of the best parts of life are found in the quiet, simple moments like these. Because all the victories in the world can’t compare to the precious moments life blesses us with, if only we slow down long enough to recognize them and cherish them.

It’s amazing what a bath and a little oil will do for those legs!!

The hen above is looking ashy, dusty, and grey, while the hen below has those nice, dark black legs.

What’s the difference, you may ask?

A BATH.

Far too often, breeders and enthusiasts are quick to point out light or grey legs, jumping straight to claims that a bird is mixed or short of standard bred. When, in all reality, that bird might just be a little dusty from doing what birds do best… being BIRDS! 😂

Dirt, dust, and a buildup of debris can dull the appearance of even the darkest legs. A little cleaning can make a world of difference in how that pigmentation presents visually.

So, the next time you have a panic attack over some grey legs, take a deep breath, grab some water, and WASH THAT BIRD!
