Gina Wrather explains the genetics behind the “striped chicks” - the E-locus.

Ever wondered why some Ayam Cemani chicks hatch with distinct chipmunk stripes while others emerge solid black? Much of that starts with the E-locus, one of the most influential genetic locations affecting chick down color and pattern.

Unfortunately, I was a little late to the game this year setting up and preparing for buffalo gnats and sadly lost a hen yesterday.

She was tucked away in a corner by the deck with no obvious signs of illness other than buffalo gnats covering her face and packed into her nostrils. Sadly, it doesn’t take many of these tiny pests to overwhelm a bird. Buffalo gnats are blood-feeding flies that can cause severe irritation, blood loss, respiratory distress, and in some cases sudden death, especially when birds are exposed to large numbers of them.

It is not uncommon for buffalo gnats to become more prevalent after periods of heavy rain and high humidity, as these conditions create ideal breeding environments. Their populations can seem to explode almost overnight, making it difficult to stay ahead of them.

This serves as a reminder for all poultry keepers to remain vigilant during gnat season. Watch for birds that are lethargic, isolating themselves, shaking their heads, or showing swelling around the eyes and face. Taking preventative measures early can make all the difference.

I want to wish the happiest of birthdays to my husband and partner, Matthew Bissonnette.

If it weren’t for his support, care, and unwavering love, this little chicken empire of mine simply wouldn’t exist.

From clearing his work schedule to travel with me to shows, to feeding and caring for the animals when I’m down and out, to offering the encouragement and reassurance I need when times get tough - this man is truly the backbone of it all.

Without his love and support, there is no way I would still be doing what I do today.

I am beyond blessed and grateful to have him as my partner in this life, and I cannot imagine anyone else by my side. He is my biggest supporter, my greatest teammate, and my best friend.

And beyond all of that, he is the most incredible girl dad. He is raising daughters who will move mountains because they have grown up knowing the strength, kindness, love, and dedication he pours into our family every single day.

Happy Birthday, Matthew. We love you more than words can ever express, and we are so thankful for you.
