Dr. Sommers comes to us with a wealth of experience from the small animal ER world, but he is officially trading in the overnight shifts to dive into mixed animal practice with us! From cats and dogs to horses and livestock, he’s ready to care for companions of all sizes. 🐴🐕

Did you know? Just like us (and our dogs and cats), horses get tartar buildup too! Dr. Sommers is working on the equine canine tooth here, carefully removing a heavy layer of tartar to prevent gum disease and discomfort.

Okay part 2 of our GI case. Some of us saw an obstruction, some did not. What threw us off was that the vomiting had stopped. We decided to let the barium go fully through the small and large intestines and redo the radiograph the next morning. The first picture is what we got and with the little bit of barium left it really shows the foreign body. It was a tube sock! Partially stuck in the stomach and descending 6-7 inches into the duodenum. It was too large to get it with the endoscope so Dr. Schneider (who was the first to say she saw something the previous night) removed the sock. The patient is doing great! Great job super sleuths and couch doctors! Go get your DVM and you are all hired! Big or small we see them all.

Ok, time to play the Dr! We have a young golden doodle who does like to eat things she shouldn’t. She was vomiting for a few days straight and straining to defecate, but nothing was coming out. By the time we first saw her, she had stopped vomiting so we treated medically. Her bloodwork was perfect by the way. When she returned a day or two later, she still hadn’t used the bathroom (these are the X-rays). We also used some barium to check for a foreign body since she does like to eat silly things. Would you treat this medically, have them come back the next day for more x-rays to see if anything has changed or would you go into surgery looking for a foreign body? I’ll tell you right now, the doctors were torn on what to do with this one! I’ll give everybody a day or two to respond and then I’ll show you what ended up happening.

Stevie is waiting for you to help him navigate this world!

Stevie was found wandering the streets alone. This sweet and gentle Schnauzer mix has a heart full of love and a soul full of calm. He’s not looking for adventure, he’s looking for a soft couch, a warm lap and a family to share his quiet, loyal companionship with. Stevie is blind. He has SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Detachment.) The condition is not painful and there is no known treatment or cure. He will require the consistency of a stable home where he can learn the layout with his other senses. (There is absolutely nothing wrong with his nose! He can smell a treat that is in your pocket, a half mile away!) Stevie is house trained, walks well on a leash but needs supervision and support to ensure his safety. Stevie adores other dogs, loves relaxed walks, and handles grooming like a pro. His tidy coat is a testament to his easygoing nature. If you’re ready to give Stevie his furever safe home, Stevie is ready to give it right back.
