Over the past week, numerous people have inquired about the habitat and cover we have here at Horse Swamp Hunting Preserve.
What sets us apart is our commitment to preserving real, natural quail habitat. This rare and authentic environment is a haven for wild bobwhites, a sight that's increasingly rare today. Since acquiring the majority of the preserve property in 2023, we've implemented a thoughtful management plan centered around quail conservation. Our efforts have paid off, as evidenced by the sighting of our first wild bobwhite quail this year. This milestone is a testament to the effectiveness of our habitat management strategies, which prioritize disturbance, diversity, and native species. We've implementated prescribed fire, mowing, thinning, tree selection, disking, and herbicide applications to create a thriving ecosystem. The result is a lush habitat teeming with grasses, forbs, and flowers, providing the perfect cover for bobwhites. Our food plots, brush piles, and tree lines offer a comprehensive network of resources and cover, while our predator control program ensures a balanced environment. As we move forward, we're excited to introduce new initiatives, including trapping and forestry mulching, to further enhance the preserve. Our goal is to create a haven where quail populations can flourish, and we're confident that our dedication and expertise will drive that positive change.
