Morning food exercises… Getting Foster to bring me his food bowl for breakfast. If he does not bring me his food bowl to my hand, he does not get his portion of food. The bowl is quite big with no edges for him to be able to flip. So if it ends face down, there really isn’t a way for him to be able to flip it over at this point. That’s the only assistance that I’m giving him however, inside of the kennel, he can use the sides of the kennel that are curved to be able to push it against to be able to get underneath it to help flip the bowl over. So I intentionally put the food bowl upside down inside the kennel so he has to practice flipping it.

First day of training for Foster! Food bowl! I was very ambitious and I decided that my goal was to get him to pick up his food bowl on his first day of training with me. If anybody wants to do this, it is on our YouTube channel. Just look for us and it’s pretty easy to find and there’s tons of training videos on there. We use a little plastic to go bowl, that has been buried in his dog food for at least half an hour. At first, I just let him chew on it and the moment that he picks it up in his mouth he gets a series of commands. The first one is “GET” which means to pick something up, the second one is “BRING” in that point I will try to get him to take at least one step towards me and that means to bring the item to me and it doesn’t matter how far he comes. It just matters that he comes in my direction. And then I will give him the command of “GIVE” and I will exchange the bowl for a treat that way it’s in my hand when he gets the treat. This is really important so that he does not feel that I am stealing something from him. We want to make sure that it is a fair trade or even that he is potentially winning in the trade at all times. Playing this game took us roughly 7 minutes and he was picking up his food bowl and handing it to me, he would get a treat for handing it to me, I would take a handful of food and put it into his food bowl and then give him his food bowl on the floor. He would then eat his food out of his food bowl and then pick up his food bowl and hand it back to me in exchange for a treat and the cycle would continue until all this food was gone out of the cup of food that I had set off to the side that I was using.

We have a new puppy named Foster that we’re training. Will be adding some new things that he’s working on. I’ll also make sure I post how long it took him to comprehend each section of that piece of training. Please realize that when I say it took X amount of time for him to start doing it it does not mean that it is trained in that amount of time it just means that the lightbulb clicked and he was doing it repetitively at that amount of time. This little guy started off terrified and would shake nonstop. He wouldn’t take treats from anybody and would just want to hide in the corner. Fast forward a few months and we have a dog who will get some good positive tail wags, and great pets from everybody around. He will almost always take a treat from everybody. And as long as he’s not too over stressed, he will even pick up your car keys, cell phone, wallet, or even your earbuds if you drop them for you.
