First ride on Sampson yesterday, and WOW. This boy impressed me!

Can you believe he’s only 2½ years old?!

What impressed me most wasn’t just how quiet-minded he was, but how incredibly sensitive and responsive he was. He moved forward beautifully from my leg, stopped from my seat, and was constantly checking in with me. I mean, WOW!

But here’s the part you don’t see in this video…

We’ve spent several weeks doing groundwork and round pen work, establishing the basics before ever getting on his back.

One of the biggest things I want my young horses to understand from day one is that when they’re unsure, stopping and checking in with me is always an option.

I don’t want their first instinct to be to run through pressure. I want them to understand that they can stop, think, and wait for direction. We reinforce that from the very beginning while also teaching them to confidently move forward from the leg.

It’s a balance between responsiveness and relaxation, and I was thrilled to feel how well Sampson understood those lessons on his very first ride!

Sampson is a 2½-year-old Zangersheide by Comme Il Hero Z, and he’s already standing 16.2 hands! We suspect he’ll finish somewhere around 17.2, so we wanted to introduce these basics before he gets any bigger!

Our plan is to spend about 30 days introducing him to riding, getting comfortable with the aids, and doing some quiet trail riding. Nothing demanding, just building confidence and understanding.

Then he gets to go right back to being a horse until next year. Growing, grazing, and enjoying life out in the pasture.

There’s no rush. We’re just laying the foundation for the horse he’ll become.

And if this is how he handles his very first ride, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this boy!

Another milestone in the books!

Rob had his first trot under saddle, and I love watching these young horses begin to figure things out. It was so hot for so long we waited until cooler weather to progress Rob’s training.

It’s not about how much we can accomplish in one session. It’s about how much confidence we can build for the next one.

One ride at a time.

Six years. Not a single case of colic.

Coincidence? Maybe. But I think the way we manage our horses and our farm has a whole lot to do with it.

Healthy horses start long before something goes wrong. 🌱

This is why we have chosen to use Jane Polk’s Thoroughbred Stallion TF Stars Never Lie (who has all of these names in his pedigree) as the sire to some of our 2027 babies. We look forward to pairing some of our warmblood mares to TF Stars Never Lie to bring back some of those thoroughbred jumping lines that fell off the map. Here is the start to something great! 🙌🙌

Many years ago, here in the USA if not in Europe, there was ONE Thoroughbred stallion who was the gold standard for siring jumpers.

Bonne Nuit had several sons and grandsons who also became well known as sires of jumpers, New Twist, Good Twist and Night Lark being three.

But we dropped the ball. It would have taken BIG MONEY to have put together a big enough breeding program to solidify that beginning, and it simply didn’t happen on a large enough scale.

There were a number of small breeders who tried to keep the Thoroughbred jumping lines alive, but none had a big enough impact to compete with the warmblood invasion. And maybe it wouldn’t have even been possible to compete with those massive breeding programs in Europe, no matter what we did?

Takoma keeps putting the pieces together! ❤️🐴

A personal best in dressage and a strong finish among a very competitive group! This boy is getting stronger, putting on his dancing shoes, and showing so much promise in the dressage arena!

Jumping was another step forward this weekend. He was brave, letting me put my leg on and send him forward with confidence. But I keep reminding myself that he is so much greener than I give him credit for. The rails and moments of uncertainty remind me that we still have confidence to build. The jump is absolutely in there!

So, we stay right where we are, keep building his strength, and make him feel like the superstar he is. Confidence first, and the rest will come!

We did have a few bucks in stadium, and we’re starting to notice an interesting pattern. When his buddies are nearby, he’s happy as can be. When he’s on his own, the bucking tends to show up. So we’re continuing to investigate, make sure he’s comfortable, and better understand what he needs.

This horse has so much potential, and I’m determined to give him every opportunity to succeed. Sometimes the biggest progress isn’t moving up a level. It’s taking the time to build the horse underneath you. ❤️

Jayla’s First Beginner Novice Horse Trial! 🐎

Oh, Miss Jayla! This mare has SO much talent, but we are learning that sometimes the hardest things have nothing to do with the jumps!

With the hurricane rolling through, I didn’t get to ride her the day before, and I think she came out pretty stiff. Unfortunately, she decided being a giraffe was much more appealing than being a dressage horse, so our score definitely reflected that! 😂🦒

One of our biggest challenges is her tendency to stay bent to the left, making straightness and suppleness particularly difficult. We are working hard to build the strength and balance she needs to carry herself correctly, but it’s going to be a long-term process.

The good news? We used every opportunity in stadium and cross country to improve how she was carrying herself, and when she was straight and balanced, she jumped beautifully!

I have no doubt this mare has upper-level potential. She is brave, athletic, and LOVES her job. It’s so tempting to move her up to Novice because the Beginner Novice fences barely register with her!

But just because they can jump bigger doesn’t mean they’re ready to move up.

If we don’t address the hard things now, those little holes in our foundation will become much bigger problems down the road.

So, the next few months will be about building strength, straightness, and balance. The jumps will come. Right now, the flatwork is where the real work needs to happen.

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to be patient enough to build the foundation correctly.

So proud of this talented girl! The future is bright, Jayla! ❤️🐎

Victory’s first Novice stadium round at Stable View, and this boy just keeps adding more springs to his jump! 🚀🐎

He came into the ring feeling confident, forward, and ready to tackle whatever was in front of him! I should have asked for one more half-halt in the Stable View line, but we stayed a little too forward and took a rail.

What I’m most excited about is how adjustable and brave he’s becoming! He jumped in tight to the two-stride and then stretched beautifully to make the distance happen. That’s a big step forward for this young horse!

And a 30.1 in dressage with SO much room left to improve! 🙌

Every outing, he’s getting stronger, more confident, and more rideable. This kid is going places, and I’m so excited for his future!

Well done, Victory! ❤️
